Kimagure na Dowa no Hon

by Alan Lastufka | 11/14/2006 | in user reviews | zines

Kimagure na Dowa no Hon (a storybook of whimsy)

Kimagure na Dowa no Hon (a storybook of whimsy) is a split zine by two American zinesters in Japan. Before embarking on another country, Jennie and Carolee agreed to create something every night before bed and publish those creations, with only minor revisions allowed, as a zine upon their return.

Accompanying the two girls’ journal-esque musings is a beautiful layout consisting almost entirely of found objects (receipts, stickers, stamps) from the streets and floors of Japan. Kimagure is an enjoyable vicarious trip, with none of the associated turbulence.

now, we know some people find "girls" offensive

and for good reason. it's usually used in a deliberately oppressive, sexually offensive manner. best utlized by those who can use it to describe themselves, or heavily qualified with phrases like "as they refer to themselves in the zine" or, you know, somethin' else.

not trying to come down hard on anybody here—not even tryin' to take sides in this issue (this comin' from someone who prefers the word "girl")—but we gotta keep the discussion open, and the debates respectful.

I didn't mean to be disrespectful, if that's the way it came across. No where on their site do they refer to themselves as "grrrl"s, nor is there a spot in their zine. I definitely wasn't using the term to talk down to them, or anyone else. I sent the review to the zine's authors before posting it here and they were excited about it, and didn't mention it's usage either.

I recently did a *really dumb* thing, when a transgendered person I was talking to explained to me that when faced with gendered bathrooms, this person always chose the women's room. And so, later, when I referred to this person as "she" I think I offended. Which sucks, cause I would totally have dated that person. I explain all this not to burden you-all with my dating foibles, hilarious though they may be, but to really underscore that even those of us who think about gender equity 24/7 don't always know how to refrain from offense.

well, the only solution i ever come up with is discussion. so: girls vs. grrrls vs. ladies vs. women vs. wimmin: discuss. i have to go do a reading, so you-all are in charge of sorting it out.
