DC Councilman Moves to Ban Minors from Clubs in DC

by anne elizabeth moore | 01/26/2007 | in activism | all-ages clubs | DC

DC Councilman Jim Graham has introduced emergency legislation to ban minors from venues that serve alcohol following the murder of a 17 year old outside one nightclub, erasing 20+ years of effort on behalf of organizations like Positive Force to ensure spaces for the all-ages appreciation of music and culture.

Dischord Records urges you to write to Jim Graham and Mayor Fenty now and show your support for all ages access to music in Washington, DC.

Write Jim Graham: jim@grahamwone.com
Write Mayor Fenty: http://app.dc.gov/apps/about.asp?page=atd&type=dsf&referrer=%5b$DSF_SERVER_NAME$%5d&agency_id=1075

Man, this sucks. I'm a huge fan of the whole Dischord family, and let me just say this is a bummer. The DC movement was really not focused on alcohol, but rather the music and culture itself. It's sad that a large number of minors are now being punished for one person's careless and stupid actions, and also the ignorance of Jim Graham. Unfortunately not many people in government can see that venues are not just a place for getting shit-faced, they are an outlet for creativity and community, whether it be sober/drug free or not.

Banned in D.C. with a thousand more places to go.
Gonna swim across the Atlantic, cause that's the only place I can go.

You, you can't hurt me, me I'm banned in D.C. D.C.

We, we got ourselves, gonna sing it, gonna love it, gonna work it out to any length.
Don't worry, no worry, about what people say.
We got ourselves, we gonna make it anyway.

You, you can't hurt me, why I'm banned in D.C. D.C. D.C.

And if you ban us from your clubs, it's the right time, with the right mind.
And if you think we really care, then you won't find in my mind.
Noooo! You can't afford, to close your doors, so soon no more.

My oh my i lay you down upon the ground so soon no more.
Nooo you can't afford to close your doors so soon no more.

My oh my i let you down upon the grounddddddd
