hot enough to write

by anne elizabeth moore | 08/30/2007 | in hotness | literature | publishing

Interesting article in the Boston Phoenix yesterday noted the growing improtance of hotness to what we consider literary talent, which makes it the only article I've ever read in the newspaper that caused me to make a haircut appointment:

"Literature, unlike so many other media industries, is technically a meritocracy. But that won’t stop book marketers, bloggers, critics, and the literary community at large from collectively slobbering over a pretty author. No, the literary rules changed ages ago. Books no longer need to be serious in order to be published; there are fewer and fewer venues available for reviews (rendering competition more intense with every passing catalogue season), and critics aren’t doing their job unless they are merciless."

umm....

yeah...based on conversations with my co-workers, genre fiction is largely alive and well, and *COUGH* there is the juggernaut that is Oprah's book club.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I give a fair amount of weight to all of y'alls opinions and various other interweb sources.

Yeah, writer as personality, as hipster beauty vamping it up in the right bar in the right neighborhood in the right city is a sad old story thatus sleestaks understand all too well.

Back when the curly hair gel and unbuttoned oxford crew over at McSweeny's flung open the back door that tuesday morning, stumbling out of that still churning Rave party, the one in the meatpacking district, that started by invitation only on the previous thrusday night, they did so carrying manuscripts. Using daddy's connections and a pocketful of coke, they burst into the market changing everything forever.

Pretty was the new literary.
And it has only really, gotten much much worse.
