The Sad Truth About Children's Birthday Party Invitations

At age 5, a child's popularity outside of school is based largely on his or her parents' own social status. I only just got that memo.

Given the energy required to keep up the absurd levels of social stroking and tactical positioning you need to be any kind of socialite, I haven't been bothered in the last ten or fifteen years. Also, the fact that I think people are crap doesn't help. I just have a few friends here. Only one has a kid.

But now we come to the golden age of the children's birthday party. At age 5, a child's party is really an adult party too, but in the afternoon and with lame food. But do I realy want to sit round with the local stitch n bitch crew while they make inane political comments and talk about Sex and the City? No. Does my son want to go to their kids' parties? Yes. Des he get invited? No. Why? Because I'm not in the club.

They say suicide rates double over Christmas

Received wisdom says that the pain of loneliness becomes unbearable while others are enjoying the happiest time of the year.

Received wisdom is usually bollocks.

The results are not e'en very interesting.

A strange fascination with who is using what word, when and where?

Sure, but why 'ponk ass biotch?' Why not 'shew forth' or 'bailiwick' or 'bellwether' or a word or phrase I actually like?

The Rain Won't Stop

I've never seen a monsoon beore. Its fucking ridiculous. We have had, averaged out, about ten hours a day of steady rain, and another three to five hours of very heavy rain, every day, for about a week. And it was rainy before! I's not like we had a dry spell and then this happened. It was pouring with rain every day and THEN the monsoon came. AND we are in a rainshadow (!) so it is even wetter elsewhere. Hah! Poor basards. This morning I got a cheap chinese umbrella (which later broke) and walked along the highway, staying semi-dry while it pelted down around me for hours, and then I sat on the shore at the Iron Bottom Sound and drank coffee and watched it some more.

Failures of Reproduction / Derisive Term: Stillborn PhD

Professor Tom Vawter sent an email to all members of the Wells community calling Republicans “stupid.” He closed his email with this quote: “’Lobotomies for Republicans: It's not just a good idea; it’s the Law!’ --Yellow Dog.”
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=10708
by Kristy Lee Hochenberger.
Comment: Good research little girl. Your points are valid, however small schools recruit faculty for their potential teaching ability. Even so, from what you say about Vawter's record, if true, it means that he could be what we used to derisively call a stillborn PhD. His activity in the socio-political realm may imply several things. First, the guy may not be much of a success so far in science, therefore to build his ego, he seeks the affirmation of students. Second, this may be a temp job for him before a post doc., in which case he's sorta treading water for the moment. Third, he may be in the wrong field and would have majored in minority or feminist studies, but couldn't because he's a white male. Fourth, he has other career aspirations than academia, but what the hell, it's a girls school if you get my drift, Vern.
