Obvious Agenda

by cassiopoeia | 02/28/2007

You can call me a hippie fucking idealist, but I still have a goal.

I want to research punk movements, which sucks 'cause of how insular cliques are, how resistant everybody is to questions about how and why, complicated by the fact that I'm really bitchy and people don't like me.

I still want to do it, though, even though I know I'm gonna get pissed on (most likely, literally). I think that people who self-define as punk have a legitimate problem with the way the world is, and I think that if we all just sit around bitching about it our choice to join a minority boils down to music and fashion. That's it, unless punk movements, well, move.

The beginning of the research project I'll never get off the ground

by cassiopoeia | 02/27/2007 | in anarchy | Bikini Kill | capitalism | chaos | intellectual culture | movement politics | NOFX | rebellion

While I have often been a critic of those in the punk movement who subscribe to the ideal of anarchy, my research thus far has helped me reevaluate my own position as a participant in both punk and mainstream societies. Anarchy under the punk movement is not, as it may appear, grounded in the proposal of a lawless, chaotic statelessness. It may be strange for a person who has participated heavily as a punk for nearly a decade to write this, but I just got anarchy. It is critical to distinguish the punk proposal of anarchy as the removal of compulsory laws which are created in a non-participatory environment (such as the current constitutional republic of the United States).

Prada Punk?

by cassiopoeia | 01/05/2007 | in designer | fashion | glasses | image | moral dilemma | Politics | pressure | social commentary

Here's my question:

I like to think of myself as one of those punks who isn't in it for the image. Sometimes I'll get dressed up for a show or to party, but most of the time, I'd rather just wear fuzzy sweaters (it's cold here in New England, and ripped fishnets just don't insulate).

In any case, I do have a few accessories other than my body mods that I wear all the time to let people know where I'm coming from. I have a sweet pair of giant star earrings and a good colection of t-shirts from concerts.

I also have a Kenneth Cole studded watch that I wear every day, and yesterday I aquired my first pair of eyeglasses - I'm getting old. They were covered through my insurance company (I'm a unionized grad student - workers unite!), and so I got a fairly pricey pair for cheap, I just couldn't resist. Geeky Buddy-Holly-black-plastic with little stars on the sides that match my earrings and my neck tats.
