You can call me a hippie fucking idealist, but I still have a goal.
I want to research punk movements, which sucks 'cause of how insular cliques are, how resistant everybody is to questions about how and why, complicated by the fact that I'm really bitchy and people don't like me.
I still want to do it, though, even though I know I'm gonna get pissed on (most likely, literally). I think that people who self-define as punk have a legitimate problem with the way the world is, and I think that if we all just sit around bitching about it our choice to join a minority boils down to music and fashion. That's it, unless punk movements, well, move.
Right now, we're stuck. It's hard to tell the music/fashion from the politics. Some punks don't even like the frigging music/fashion, they're just hoping for a revolution of some type [hoping that a revolution even can exist]. Everybody is so set on being an individual that, while we may talk about how punk cultures function with ingroup distinctions just like any other culture, we still trip all over ourselves to keep outsiders outside.
And so, there is no meaning. Which you may say is the point of punk - the resistance to everything.
But if there's no meaning, then punk is just music/fashion, which sucks.
All I'm looking for is some meaning.
