Sunday night was a special treat for me.
For the first time in 15 years, I was standing in a small club watching The Dead Milkmen play. The show, in the basement of Philadelphia's First Unitarian Church, was a warm-up gig for their appearance next week at the FunFunFunFest in Austin, Texas.
The Milkmen launched their set with "Punk Rock Girl" and ended, after two encores, with "Two Feet Off The Ground". From beginning to end, it was the best Milkmen show I've ever seen. They must have been secretly honing their skills during their quiet retirement over the last 15 years.
Between songs, front-man Rodney Anonymous, now looking much more the part of a 40-something business analyst, took several opportunities to condemn and berate VP candidate Sarah Palin, much to the delight of most in attendance. But that's an easy no-brainer: the crowd was mostly aging punk-rockers or post-punks. I saw a lot of people like me, who left the kids with a sitter to spend one more night screaming along with "Tiny Town" and "Stuart".
Rodney also hinted that the band would love to start playing more shows. Here's hoping they actually do.
Welcome back, Dead Milkmen.
