Loyola takes back WLUW

by Dave Hoffa | 07/18/2007 | in I'm pissed

Super bullshit. Read about it here:

http://www.timeout.com/chicago/outandabout/?p=2548#more-2548

Doubly sucks because I was going to do a metal show later this year. ARGH.

FYI: For some reason, this link dumps you in the middle of the article. Scroll up to the top.

Photographer from the Lawrence Arms show last night.

by Dave Hoffa | 03/17/2007 | in distractions | idiots | jerks

Dear Photographer From the Lawrence Arms Show Last Night,

While I understand that documenting this sort of thing (punk rock) as being incredibly important, the fact that you were taking pictures throughout the entire sets of the three bands that I saw while wearing a bright yellow shirt was just unacceptable. While I don't always agree with the rules and regulations for big arena shows, I now understand why photographers are made to leave the front of the stage after three songs or so.

Everywhere I looked on the stage, all I could see was your shirt, and then your arms flailing wildly after taking a picture, presumably to get some sort of cool effect in the said pictures.

I'm leaving for the UK tomorrow

by Dave Hoffa | 01/31/2007

I'm touring as the merch guy for Brutal Truth for 10 days. Come by a show and say HI if you're really bored.

I don't expect anyone on here to care about Brutal Truth, but hey . . . it's worth a shot.

Dave Hoffa's Jackin' Pop Choices

by Dave Hoffa | 01/23/2007

So I was asked to take part in this Best Albums of 2006 poll, and the results are in. One had up to 10 choices and could either assign each a point rating based on how high you wanted that particular album rated, or you could give each of the 10 albums 10 points, rating them all evenly.

I chose to give all 10 albums 10 points, and here's my list (you'll notice it looks very similar to my best-of list for Punk Planet 77):

1. The Lawrence Arms, Oh! Calcutta!
2. Cannibal Corpse, Kill
3. Frightmare, Bringing Back the Bloodshed
4. Mr. Lif, Mo' Mega
5. Cretin, Freakery
6. Lair of the Minotaur, The Ultimate Destroyer
7. V/A, Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal
8. Kashmere Stage Band, Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974
9. The Steinways, Missed the Boat
10. Clipse, Hell Hath No Fury

Now, here's where they ended up in the poll:

Do you know anyone in Glasgow, Scotland that's awesome?

by Dave Hoffa | 01/22/2007 | in Bears | Super Bowl needs | travel

OK. I'm going to be in Glasgow, Scotland the day of the Super Bowl on tour as a merch guy. The game will air at like midnight. Do any of you know anyone there that I can stay with and stay up late to watch the game?

I have no idea where we're staying that night, but really, really want to support the Bears from across the Atlantic.

RIP Bam Bam Bigelow

by Dave Hoffa | 01/20/2007 | in death | pro wrestling

The subject line says it all. Though it seems he made some poor life choices, he's one of these guys that won't ever be forgotten. I mean, he had flame tattoos on his fucking head!

Also, he saved some kids from a burning house one time. Seriously.

Rest in peace, Bam Bam!

Fugazi and the NFL?

by Dave Hoffa | 11/19/2006

Anyone else catch a snippet of "Waiting Room" during week 11's "These are the Games That are Happening in Week 12" segment?

It was definately Fugazi, no question about it.

Thoughts?

Random Record (9.4.2006) Gang Starr: Hard to Earn

by Dave Hoffa | 09/04/2006 | in music | user reviews

Gang Starr's fourth LP falls almost directly in the middle of their not-so prolific output. Quite far removed from their first album, No More Mr. Nice Guy, Hard to Earn is a solid, but not completely memorable record. After the popularity of their previous two albums, Daily Operation and Step in the Arena, the duo's fourth album is just kind of there.

Random Record (8.29.06) Micranots: Obelisk Movements

by Dave Hoffa | 08/29/2006 | in music | user reviews

Okay. As the resident record nerd at Punk Planet, and because of my day job in a record store, I've decided to randomly choose one record per week and write about it on this here site. First up is from the 13th letter of the alphabet, M.

The Micranots initally formed in Minneapolis with three members (MC I Self Divine, DJ/production-guy Kool Akiem, and mystery member Truth Maze, who I'm assuming was another MC), although none of their recorded output recognizes this. Their first full-length, Return of the Travellahs was casstte-only, released in 1996 (and later re-packed onto CD by the Rhymesayers label), and featured only I Self Divine and Akiem.
