I think that we all know what the latest trend is ....being an "emo" and it seems that the public still cant see the difference between an emo and just a general punk,so the question is whats the difference?? now i dont wanna hear the basics such as a an emo cuts his/herself and a punk doesnt...i wanna know more into it???...what realy seperates a punk and an emo?? im sick & tyred of ppl seeing me and saying "look at that emo" as walk down too my local HMV i wanna...shall we say educate the public on whats the standards too be an emo and a punk...i would love to hear what others have got too say?? or am i just wasting type space because punks and emos are the same thing?? you tell me....if its bad or good id love too hear the full facts on the difference between the general punk and general emo.......and i wanna know is there anybody else in the same boat as me????? is there anybody else who cant walk too there corner shop without being named an emo buy a stranger when they claim too be a punk or being called a punk when they believe too be an emo. please it would be interesting too hear what others have too say....more importantly is there half half?? can there be an emo / punk?? and if there are ppl like that where are you guys?????? show yourselves i think im half half id like too know others who are aswel,i think that its a bit insulting when ppl mistake punks who dont forget have been around since before i was born too an emo who has only been out since 2 years ago ( not saying that theres anything wrong with an emo,i just find it a bit insulting )...come on ppl id love too hear what uv got too say.....taz.......................
emos vs punks
Ahem
Emo: A young adult 13-23 that indulges in self pity while going through the adolescent stage. It is needed to be noted however that the major ity of those that subscribe to the "Emo" theory come out of house holds that are concidered higher middle class to high class.
Punk: A person at teh age of 14-15 that realises that their communtiy is in a confomed shambles and that they recognize that their whole society is beyond any redeeming value. Punks generally trascend most classes and are active in trying to change the staus quo.
* Fact - The emos' inner turmoil stems from one crushing fact. They purport to only want to go out in the rain - to hide the tears that stream endlessly down their faces - yet the rain messes up their ridiculously cool hair - what to do???? You see.... you see the harm this kind of problem inflicts.....
* Fact - Emos are spreading across the globe - this problem is real and it's happening NOW - Mongolia has already been lost.
* Fact - All emos smell like almonds - 'tis the smell of evil.
* Fact - Emos aren't human - so it's okay to be mean to them.
* Fact - Emos will all one day grow up to work in banks.
* Fact - An Emo is another word for a cabbage.
* Fact - Emos do grow on trees. In fact, they spawn from the roots.
* Fact - Emos are more prone to bad vision than other humans, due to either their poorly styled fringes, eye infections from eyeliner, or from being on myspace all day long.
people always confuse emo's with goths, well because they dont know any better they might even go as far as calling punks goths, lets face it, anything they catagorize as being "not normal" they just put them all into one big steretoype,
but there are loads of differences between punks and emo's..
after all, how many sex pistol songs are there about killing self or the feeling of dying
Punk is more out "alive" lets just say :P
by the way, who the hell came up with screamo :P
let's get back to the question.what the hell is emo and when does music become emo? Eg. I've listened to AFI since they've been around and only recently have they ever been called emo. How does having an album called Sing the Sorrow make it emo all of the sudden, have people actually listened to what their singing about or have I finally lost it.
I personaly don't mind emos, as long as they aren't the ones that whine about everything. But now, its the new fad, all I see is MCR shirts and stupid looking hair cuts. The thing is though, emo is the ultimate insult now. Its replaced fag, dip shit, ass whipe, you name it realy. Like if you wear any black now, your automaticaly emo. Yet, emo stands for emotion, which is something that makes us human, and now you get riduculed for it. Welcome to the demise and decline of modern society. Punks in my opinion are just any one who doesn't give a shit if they look punk or not. usualy the mohawk should be enough, same with liberty spikes, but the thing is, the people who use "emo" as a generalized insult, are usualy dumb asses who call everyone who wears black emo. From goths, to punks, to hardcore kids. These idiots, mostly wiggers, are influenced by thier rap idols who they try to hard to be, and think they are superior, yet we have the brains. Personaly i gave up on "dressing" punk. All i wear is a wallet chain, stretched black jeans and a nice dress shirt with a buzz cut, yet i stil get called emo. Lol, so any one who is wearing anything that fits into the category of emo, is automaticaly emo. Hopefully this fad will die away soon so we can all get on with our meaningless lives.
Cheers!

Are there not bigger problems in the world? i can understand the frustfration in being unable to walk to your corner store without being labelled but seriously the whole thing bout who's who is really a load of bull. Shouldn't people like yourselves be aware of what you, yourself are and if the world doesnt get it then thats their problem. there once was a time when the young generation (and the older ones too) were individuals and had their own way of life and understanding their surroundings. provided you understand yourself and who you are what the hell does it matter what people call you. be it emo, punk, whatever your life is to be lived, not to be worried about. if you dont know who you are then go out into the world and find out. if i am wrong please feel free to explain the importance of this big media frenzy to me
but when has the youth ever been individuals. back in the day they were controlled by their parents and when the began to speak out they were criticised for it. Just look at the punks around the sex pistols era. and getting mislabelled can cause a problem as it may confuse the public and may cause them all to misunderstand what we are about and that may cause them to see us as a joke. and we dont want that do we buddy
but the punks stood up for what they believed in. they werent going to sit back and watch their life waste away in a boring 9-5 job, living in the same place for their entire life, exactly how their fathers, grandfathers etc had done. they opposed the control of their parents and therefore stood up for their beliefs (became individuals). are you saying youd rather be unheard for the fear of being heard and misunderstood?? isnt the point of the punks to stand up and say "fuck it all" to the world?? if your really concerned about what people are going to think then thats completly contradicting the idea behind the punk movement. as long as you know who you are again what does it matter what the world thinks???!!!
thats true but thats what these people are trying to figure out... the difference between punk and emo. you just discribed punk but what about emo. everyone sees emos as being little shits that complain a lot and if people misjudge us and see punks as emo how are we ever gunna make a difference in this world and try to fix all the crap that the previous generations have done?? punks dont care about what the media and public think but that doesnt mean they dont need to be respected.
wat i described is the true punk movement back in the 70-early 80s but even youd have to agree that true punks have died. so wat does this 'pop punk' culture stand for? and is there really a difference between this modern punk culture and the emos or is everybody just trying to get a piece of the media when really there are bigger issues in the world
pop punk is merely punk that has become mainstream and i do have to admit that the traditional punk movement died a very long time ago. but did you ever think that if we get in the media spotlight we could use it to our advantage and make changes for our future. sure not many people do use it for good but instead for theirselves but its worth a try. and if you want to address the bigger issues in the world then all you have to do is lead the way and im sure many will follow buddy
yes i difinitly agree the media can be used for a positive effect-take bono for example one of the reasons why hes really affecting so many people and making them think about poverty is because he can reach them through the media along with other ways. but what is the point of emo's and this new pop punk movement, what are they trying to change or achieve? what is the backbone/core/whatever to their movement? what unites them all together?
i can see your point and you are putting up a good fight but that is the point of this forum. these people are just trying to find where they belong and to gain a sense of identity. how are we to know what a group stands for and what they are about if no one really know how to tell the difference between them. until we know that you cannot say that they stand for nothing
(its danielle that is detective cause shes a stalker, im agent cause i malipulate people into my type of thinking, like when i made you buy that cd when you had never heard of them lol. and your cadet cause i couldnt think of anything else to call you that day)
firstly i never said they stand for nothing if that was intended towards me. and secondly the point of this forum is to define the difference between punks and emos. but i am adding a new dimension. emos have been around for 20years, there abouts, and are different to the mass-media produced ones today (the ones with black long fringes?, and those little tight black jeans.) but they, like today's punks will difinitly stand for something. so i place the new question- Whats the difference between the original punk movement and the one today, and what the diff between the original emo movement and the one today. and what the diff between today's punk and emo movement???
the difference is the media and the effects it has had on people and the views of the public. a lot of the people you see in the street that fit the stereotypical emo look will in fact deny being emo and may get quite angry about getting falsely accused of it. the only thing that has changed is that there are more try hard wunnabe's out there who think that they are punk and/or emo without fully understanding what punk/emo is. and it is those try hards that the media and puplic focus on and are used to represent the rest of the punks/emos.
*and any one else please feel free to include yourself in this little debate thing that we have going on. it would be greatly appreciated to get other peoples views
however, the original punk movement also had media. when they stood on the streets around their homes the media was watching and recording. they thought punks were just gangs causing trouble or something like that. but the true punks knew this and fought for the truth to be shown. i dont think the media is the true ingredient to blame as both movements had to defeat it. whatever the punks these days and emos (although less so because are they really a movement or just a way to 'take the load off' via music?) stand for or believe in something i think if they tried hard enough to declare it could get it out to the public. im sure the media could be used to their advantage.
but do we sound like a pair of old guys fighting this out lol
A CALL TO ALL OUT THERE!!
if your a modern punk or emo and you wanna declare what you stand for please do so here and put our minds at rest; or start another debate.
I like meeting cool, smart, funny, people that I can relate to and have a conversation with about anything (silly or serious)
and well yah know every emo kid I have ever met is well...pathetic and lost in a selfish world of pity
The big thing they need to relize is noboy can make you feel better if you can make yourself feel better
(its in a bright eyes song somewhere)
so yeah I strait up hate the fad and the kids involved
I've meet a few emos and they were bloody hilarious. Great people and easy to talk to. But many emos are different on how they interpret the emo image. Some think you need to be miserible bastards and others perfer to express themselves in music, art, poetry etc. It varies with the individual I guess
Oddly enough there's a large amount of Emo-culture out here on the prairies. Therefore I feel that I understand Emo fairly well, but Punk culture is non-existent here... So this is how I see it:
TRUE Emo-
* have deep-rooted emotional problems
* don't necessarily cut, but some do, many practice other sorts of self-injury (can be bulimic too)
* Music is their ENTIRE life (HUGE emphasis on this one)
* know all the little bands in the area, and go to every show that it's physically possible to get to
* a-political and proud of it
* most are hooked on some sort of drug, or drugs in general
* HATE poseurs
* have been to re-hab, repeatedly
* don't usually openly admit to being emo, and if you accuse them of such, they will give you a half-hearted explanation about the emo-poseurs, and will then go back to laughing at how those they just described are SOOOOO not emo (I think this is just to confuse you so that you dont get them sent back to rehab or something, because they also seem to think ur stupid, also because it isn't emo to be emo if you know what i mean)
* ok, and they do tend to wear the studded belts, tight pants and sometimes the swoopy-in-the-face hair
* If they do like MCR they would never admit to it openly. MCR is not emo, someone mentioned it earlier
Poseur Emo-
* shoves it in your face that they cut(the cut is often tiny)
* Love MCR
* dont really know the local little bands all that well, yet can hold up a fairly long conversation about celebrities, and will then claim that they dont really follow that stuff
* seem to go out of their way EVERY SINGLE DAY to get their hair all eye-swoopy, eyeliner perfect and heavy, and wear black close with cute -but-morbid things on them (now this style does apply to the true emos too, but you'll see them some of the time dressed "normally", not so for the poseurs)
* THESE are the whiners that everyone loves to hate
* They will almost always end up bi-sexual, whether they truly are or not, nobody knows, but they seem to think it's emo to be bi as well
* openly claim to be emo regularly
* Their life is ALWAYS bad if you ask them (these ones usually have great parents, a good home, good friends...)
* not always, but are particularly prone to "internet dating"
As usual, the big companies have hyped up another promising little culture before it had time to fully mature, so it has now become a sort of joke to most people.
I'm hoping it'll pull through though, because the True Emos are usually really fascinating ppl. And because it goes along with screamo :D
That's true! real emos are totally awesome.
I sorta wish i was an awesome emo but I know now that I don't really have what it takes.
See, I once thought I was an emo because I had an ironic 1980's new wave t-shirt.
Then i found out i wasn't an emo because The thompson twins weren't that cool to begin with. (I asked my mom nad she told me.)
Then this other time i thought I wasn an emo because I had some slip-on Vans shoes. Then i found out I wasn't emo because i had the ones with the palm trees on them.
It's just too much work being an emo.
I dont know wut that is, but that's kinda the idea :D
Sounds like you have yet to find yourself. whatever that means :P
Personally i think im a bit of everything, well thats what people seem to think. they can't make up their minds on a label
I personally classify myself as a weerd
I dont know wut that is, but that's kinda the idea :D
Oh, yeah, like DUDE! I totally messed myself trying to be an Emo once. See, what happened was these punks at the mall had dared a bunch of emos to eat all these cheese pretzels. I wanted to impress the emos so I said I would do it. But the problem was that I had just drunk a HUGE Orange Julius and had some frozen yogurt before that.
I didn't get to be a punk OR an Emo. I had to go outside and wait for my mom to pick me up outside the food court. I was so embarassd at school the next day. Luckily it was a friday, though, and most of the kids were already thinking about the weekend and the cool show that was happening (AWESOME local band named Where Were You When The Fire Stopped Burning!). I was gonna go, too, but I had too much mall shame.
If you all spend your life concerned with who is "emo" and who is "punk" the rest of us may as well just go shoot ourselves in the head ...
You may as well be arguing who is better, Britney or Paris ... because you come off sounding the same.
Which store has the cooler fake punk clothes?
BAAAAHHH!!~!

Well, after some analysis I'd have to say Britney is cooler because she worked her way up and came from the streets.
But Paris is better looking and will have a much longer time being a celebrity. Also, paris has a lot more money and money is cool.
When it comes to fake punk clothes I prefer the convienience of Intenet shopping preferably from a merchant that has diversified it's retail offering to include fake punk and mainstream clothing.
For example, www.hottopic.com pretty much only offers fake punk/goth/metal clothing while a site like www.golfpunkonline.com allows me the freedom to shop for family members and friends while maintaining my punk edge.
www.hottopic.com and www.golfpunkonline.com will allow me to be the coolest fucking punk in this small town.
The internet saves us again.
I guess I should I sell my original Clash/The Jam/Siouxsie/Pistols material and go for some really cool studded belts and maybe some Blink182 stuff ...
Better yet, an "ANTI-flag" sew on patch ... that will show them what I mean.
I'm fucking psyched ... good bye old school, hello corporate sanctioned angst!!!
teh word!

I'm kind of a softie at heart but, in a sense, I agree that you should probably invest in some hot new punk tunes like My Chemical Romance, Evanescence, some old school Blink-182 and Rancid and perhaps pick up some of the newest Emo tunes like Saves The Day and Something Corporate.
There's nothing wrong, intrinsically, with liking old music like The Jam or The Clash, but we live in the 21st century and you wouldn't try to survive on the Internet in the 21st century using an old mainframe with 80k of RAM and a 40 MGHz processor, would you?
Well, then, I say neither should your stereo be without the tunes of our times.
It's interesting that you should specifically mention studded belts. BOY have they had an interesting history.
They first came somewhat into vogue during the 20th century by being associated with biker culture in the late-1950's and then were adopted by the homosexual underground in the 1960's. After that, they were embraced by Heavy metal fans in the early 1970's but weren't really worn by punks until 1979 or so and , even then, only in Englands fashionable districts.
True fashion punks wore them with flair and style. They slipped out of fashion again until the garage and crusty scene picked up on them again. I have a real admiration for crusty punks, too. There's a lot of sacrifice that goes into saving all your money for a belt. But I still don't like it when crusties are all around the mall and hanging out at Hot Topic or Sam Goody. They kind of smell bad and I don't want to stand very close to them. But, I can deal...)
Now with the Emo explosion they are, thankfully, being made by several manufacturers worlwide and, thus, are available in variety of colors, sizes, widths, etc.
It's cool that the Internet helps you be a better punk. Good luck, man!
ive been a HUGE afi fan since i was 14 your typical age to start listening to afi LMAO anyways i have found their olders stuff to be more on the punk side of the scale with songs such as serial wars, who ever said you could touch me, and good ol' i wanna get a mohawk LMAO but their newest very recent stuff is just ... well... bad in my opinion if you put it besides say that and stay fashionable. i tried my hardest to listen to their new album but i couldnt understand squat i just dont get the whole webster dictionary style songs i hope you dont think am an idiot for that but i like my songs to be able to communicate their point across with good plain everyday english but hey thats just me :P later

While you are definately right on the worthwhile world issues to discuss other that definitions for punk vs. emo or what-have-you...I'd like you to know that your true punks have died statement is utterly incorrect. There are still TRUE punks alive and kicking. and I am one of them.. I know of lots of others too. Just because you have no knowledge of any in your neck of the woods doesnt mean we dont exist. (damn kids nowadays!!) Shit. my son is your age and he realizes that. And let me tell you.. 40 is just around the corner little one..
That's seeems unfair. For example, the manager of my local McDonalds has no idea where the Hamburger originated or the history of Freedom Fries, but he "labels" himself, if you will, a hamburger salesman and is very familiar with the product he sells daily.

Dude, there are no more TRUE hamburger salesmen left these days. And if there were, I bet they'd be all PC and prefer hamburger salesPEOPLE.
Okay... Sorry Pyre for using yours to reply to. It seemed to be on the subject and please don't kill me, I'm new.. if that means anything..
But there seems to be alot of messed up information. So.. this is what I have found out and it is my opinon.
SO MANY people think that 'emo' is a term for someone who
is OVERLY sensitive, deppressed most of the time, cuts,
does drugs, loves music and such. Some of this is true and most of it is not.
First off, people who are 'emo' are not friendly.
The only reason we have so many posers is because people think that they are sad, deppressed, artsie and want to be loved. Emo people don't want to be loved, they want people to leave them alone. They hate the world and have given up on everyone on the planet(including themselves).
They hate themselves, the people around them, the cashier at the local gas station.. etc. They don't open up to people, they are secretive, don't REALLY give a damn about others, and, yes, they love their music.
They love their music, their teddy bear, razor-blade if they cut, and maybe a best-friend if they really believe they can trust that person.
Also what Pyre said was true, if you say that your emo then you must not be because you just said that you were.
Confusing right? If you say your emo then your a poser.
There seem to be alot of differnt kinds of posers..
First there are the ones who read about emos on Wikipedia. They looked at that and said, "Hey, I'm depressed almost ALL the time, I'm lonely, I'm extremely sensitive, Very shy(Can't even walk into a room full of people because of their nervous system. All they can do is stand there and freak out in their brain.)..."
These are the sencere people, they are the sensitive type. They actually think that they ARE emo. They don't know that they're just the average run-of-the-mill teenager. (I know, I usted to be one.)They have TONS of emotional ups-and-downs. First they like themselves, then they don't. Next they think you don't like them, the whole world hates them. Then back around again.
They want to be accepted and loved. They have extreme self-esteem issues and such but most of them grow out of it as they get older. Its just what most people on this earth go through as they try to find themselves.
Real emos know who they are and they know that they hate themselves(This is an all the time thing. Not a reaccuring thing!). Alot of the ones that I know are on drugs or they cut. Either to have a good time or to deal with stuff. They are the ones saying, "To hell with it and everyone else. I give up and I'm not going to let anyone in. I don't want to hurt anymore than I already am."
You see the difference?
There is also another kind of poser..
The ones who play the part so they can be popular.
Or so they can get attention. They go on and on about how emo they are. They know that they are not emo but won't admit it. How can you tell who is the sencere type and who is just a fake? The sencere types are sencere. They let people in and tell them they're secrets. They cry when the other person is on the line. They trust you almost automatically. They shower you with affection and love. They never want to let you go. All that love and attention might knock you off your feet! You might be saying, "Man, they're freaky. They're so fake."
Don't do that. They're more senstive than you know. They can take almost everything the wrong way. Be nice. Eventually they will calm down. They're just afraid of losing you.
The attention seekers have tons of friends. They're like the Queen-Bee on the other side of the social ladder. 'Nuff said.
Thats about it. This is my opinon.
~Misconseption
It is hard and solid. It cannot be moved with shovels. You must use an ice hack. Diamond hard snow and ice fragments litter my yard, ranging from 4 to 13 inches in diameter. My ice hack and shovel hath banished them from the walk and driveway, but now they sit, as if brooding, glowering. This is not the work of pixies. I am more apt to suspect vengeful imps or airborne snow-wraiths.
first off punk music is way different then emo music. second the lifestyle, emos tend to act depressed and angst and so on. punks are hyper, rebels, who are typically some what "dangerous", hate authority, and media, and Mtv. their clothing is different too. punks where ripped up clothing, band shirts, army boots, wear mohawks and liberty spikes, while emos wear girl jeans, have hair that covers half of their face, wears makeup, and so on. for a good comparisn of bands check out the punk band the sex pistols and the emo band fall out boy and compare them. u can also type in punk rock or emo into wikipedia. itll give u a rundown on both of them.
