PP.com now TAG-tastic!

Hey Folks--

A little Sunday-morning programming and tweaking, and I'm happy to say that the PunkPlanet.com user tags feature (announced here a few weeks back, has just gotten better!

First off, all the various tags are now available at easy-to-remember URLS. Like, "hey, where would I find the user reviews?" Well, they're at www.punkplanet.com/tags/user_reviews

But cooler still is that if you go back a step on the URL, to just straight up www.punkplanet.com/tags, you'll now see a list of ALL the user tags, arranged as a tag swarm, a list that sets different font weights depending on how many stories are filed under each category. It's easy and intuitive!

Have fun,

Dan

WOW.

man, this site is exploding with potential right now. I have found these forums to be an amazing outlet for creativity and collaboration in the past when it was just a simple message board, but now, the site you and the crew have designed Dan, almost demand something wonderful and productive come of it.

I hope to see much many more collaborative efforts and networking as these forums continue to develop users and members. Way to go.

thanks R John

It's great that you see the potential in all this new stuff. Coming from an veteran user of the site, that really means a lot. It's the way you guys used (and abused) the old site that made it possible for me to see the potential in a more open community-based site, one where people could not just while away the hours in the forums, but also post their own writings, comment on other people's stuff, and really begin to collaborate and create in new ways. So yeah, thanks!

And thanks for everyone for USING this stuff. That's what's driving all of us to put in the extra work to help this thing grow.

Oh, also

I've added a menu item UNDER "user blogs" that you can click on to see all the tags. What's it called? Why, "see all tags," natch. So yes, you can check that "hair pie" standing as much as you want with a single click.

So...

I take it putting the latest post on top is just not going to happen? I think people are more likely to get engaged in a conversation if they read the posts from a few hours ago first as opposed to the posts from six days ago.

Isn't it funny how the "newest posts first" layout was the one feature that everyone complained about at first on the old forum, which became the one that people loved the most?

As a poster of immense stature, let it be known that both of these concerns are of the utmost importance to me.

I can't quite say that that's much incentive to really get that problem taken care of.

That said, I've got a version of the site working with full (or more accurately: full-er) user names, but it's currently only working in one browser. The rest act like somebody threw up from a lunch of too much CSS.

In time.

It is funny. A week wouldn't go by in the old forums without someone posting asking why the forums were backwards. Now they're not and a week doesn't go by without someone (er... two people) asking why they're NOT backwards.

Well here's the thing: It is actually very easy to reverse the order. Part of the reason for offsetting the initial post from the rest of the post stack is so that the order can be reversed without it being totally confusing that the initial post appears at the top of every subsequent page too. HOWEVER, I currently can't divorce reversing the order in the forums from reversing the order in comments on blog posts and other content. While I've always felt that reverse order in forums makes the most sense, it DOESN'T seem like the right order for comments.

So there you go. I'm looking into divorcing the functionality, but I'm not sure I can. We'll see where this all ends up. In the meantime, it hasn't really seemed to slow down anyone from posting, huh?

At the very least, putting the little menu that let's us go to page 2, 3, 4, "next," or "last" at the top of the page would save us a whole lot of scrolling.
