So the Alcoholic

Found himself in the hospital last night. Wasn't sure how he got there. IT'S AMAZING!

I don't really feel sorry for him. It's a pointless exertion to do so. It almost seems like trying to help him is more of a selfish act than a selfless one. I don't know what to do with him. Dude just does not give a shit.

My conversation with him on the phone last night at about 9pm while he was in the Trauma ward:

Him: Hello?
Me: Hey
H: Hey Josh, whats up?
M: Uh, not much. I mean, you tell me. What happened?
H: Fuck, I have just had the worst luck lately. I lost my phone, my backpack, everything.
M: Yeah. Well what happened?
H: I don't remember.
M: Whats the last thing you DO remember?
H: Waking up in the back of an ambulance.
M: How about before that. I mean, the last time I talked to you, you said you were going to buy flowers and take them to some girl at a Mexican restaurant. That was yesterday at like 5 pm.
H: Yeah, yeah, I did. And it was actually cool. And we went out afterwards and walked around and went to some bar. And then I remember getting punched in the face.
M: Why'd you get punched?
H: I don't know. Now my shit is gone, someone stole it.
M: Did you call your job?
H: Yeah, I told them what happened. It's okay.
M: And its all cool? Aren't you supposed to work tomorrow?
H: No, I'm off today and tomorrow.
M: I thought you were already off on Tuesday and Wednesday?
H: Shit, what's today? Tuesday?
M: Today WAS Wednesday.
H: Well, its cool, my Mom called them.
M: Your Mom, huh? Well, I hope you don't get canned. Do you know when they're discharging you?
H: Josh, I don't know anything. I don't even know where my clothes are. Wait, hold on. (moves around) Wait, here they are in this bag. Shit, please let me wallet be in here. Fuck. I took out 200 yesterday to pay my bills and its gone.
M: You took out 200 dollars from the atm to pay your bills? You're paying your bills in cash? I didn't even know you could still do that.
H: Well, the cell phone bill, yeah, but fuck now its gone.
M: Do you have your keys?
H: Shit. No.

Etc.

But seriously, I don't think this guy needs pity. I mean, no one needs pity.

This is a fuzzy grey area because it becomes hard to realize when people like this are taking advantage of others and coasting by knowing, in the back of their minds, someone will pick up their pieces...like in this case...his MOM. And you.

Of course he could totally be sincerely going through some internal shit...I know I'd probably be the sucker that gets taken advantage of in this situation, so I'm no help.

I forgot this part of the exchange after he told me he couldn't remember what happened:

Me: What were you taking anyways?
Him: Taking? Nothing. I had like one beer.
M: So that's it, just beer? Little too much, huh? Maybe now would be a good time for you to stop drinking then.
H: I didn't even drink that much.
M: Um okay, you are kinda in the hospital.
H: Ok, yeah well maybe I did have a lot. I need to stop.
M: Yeah, I think that's probably the case. I've had a lot to drink before too but I never woke up in the hospital. Most people don't have that happen to them.

**Update**

Just talked to him on the phone. He's now home. He remembers nothing except a Nike kicking him in the head.
H: Josh, there was blood everywhere. I just went to the bank and someone used my card four times already.

Normally, like a regular person, I'd have sympathy for someone who got jumped. Not this time. He claims to have gotten the shit kicked out of him. It's not nice to think much less say but 'we can only hope so.' I'm actually suprised he was able to find his way back to the apartment today.

Sadly this does not sound bad enough to make him finally stop. I mean it might, but he really has had little ramifications from this little blackout. Nothing at least a few days of soberity can't straighten out before he is lulled back into a false sense of self-accomplishment, so much so he figures he can handle having a couple of beers again.

Something real bad is going to happen to this kid.
And really there is not a whole lot you can do to stop it.

It's like that one Shirley Jackson story where the little kid tells his mom all these stories about a really bad kid in his kindergarten class and then his mom goes to a PTA meeting and discovers from the teacher that the bad kid is actually the mom's own son!
