...is featured in a commercial for AARP. Now, I know we've had the "did you see the ad for XXX with the song by XXX in it?" conversation ad nauseum up in this piece, but AARP? That's pretty kooky.

Actually, now that I think of it, all the members of the Buzzcocks are probably old enough to be members of AARP. So never mind.

Funny You Should Mention This...

...because I saw an AARP commercial today, and it dawned on me that if you say "AARP" as a word, and not as individual letters, it sounds an awful lot like something an old person falling down would say.

"Aaaaaaaaaarp!"

Big Piece in the New York Times

about a month ago, about how AARP is totally punkin' up their image, with exclusive AARP-member concerts and all sorts of sincerely bonkers shit. I mean, it's probably great marketing but I think there are more important and relevant issues for an org devoted to retirees! personally! But maybe when I retire I will have nothing to do but think about concerts all day, i don't really know!

The ones choosing the music

The ones choosing the music for commercials these days are people in their thirties and forties who, and it pains me to write these words, grew up in the "alternative rock explosion" (yes, ironic air quotes required) so it's really not that surprising to hear the Buzzcoks playing in a commericial for AARP or Roky Erickson for Dell.

What do you think AARP commercials will be like in 15 years?

Cheesy folks reminiscing about their "hip hop days" while advocating working until death using some tired, pseudo-hardass rap lyric as a slogan?

Hmmm...or maybe it will be they won't be different at all, what with the propagation of music on the internet and the ever increasing likelihood that we are entering an age of mono-culture?

Does that apply to the absence of pop culture distinctivness between eras? Is that even possible?

Do you think we've hit a wall as far as bringing something that's new AND youthful to the table?

Probably not to all of this, but at least I can dream.

Of course

Hip hop's already been around for like 20 plus years, so my questions are possibly 20 plus years too late?

And I'm talking here people about "new" and "youthful" from a marketing perspective. Or, you know, as looked at by sales vultures. And not the old ladies that like coupons.

Gee, math is tuff.
