I think my external harddrive just crashed

i'm not convinced it did, because if i were, i'd be crying and contemplating suicide right now.

i just used this thing last nite. i've had it for over 2 years, and i just plugged it in now like i always do, and windows recognized that it's plugged in, but it's just not reading the drive itself. i keep unplugging it and plugging it back in, even restarting my pc, but it still won't read. this has never happened. nothing happened to it at all, it never got dropped or anything.

it's a western digital external with those stupid big pink lights on the side.

most of my important stuff is backed up elsewhere, but my 30gb mp3 library, important animation/video inspiration gallery, and important animation tutorial videos would be gone.

shit.

Good News: For now the drive

Good News: For now the drive is stil alive

Bad News: WD is notorious for this. After 16 months, at any time, the components (namely power) get bad and die out on you. since you seem to be outside of the one year "useless as hell" warranty, break it open and place it inside of a pc or get a extrenal hard drive case.

Also bear in mind lately i have also noticed that alot of windows comps are all of a sudden doing the "I see no hard drive but i know it's there but i'm going to be a douche anyway" routine. Crack the case open first.

howdy!

howdy!

well, you might have already fixed the problem, if not, here is what i've done to restore unreachable partitions...

i either use a program called partition magic (in order to fix some light errors that might have occured on hard drives) or (AND!)just perform a check disk (chkdsk name of the drive: /f /v /x) in the execute menu that's laid on the start menu (sorry if those names are not ringing any bells, in here those are labelled Démarrer and Exécuter as.... well, must admit i'm french...)
i restored some path leading to some data i thought were lost forever with those 20- characters...
that will work of you're lucky...
want to retrive some data AFTER partition is being formated? use EASY RECOVERY... (note: only works on NTFS formated hard drives... and takes a LOT OF TIME!!!)
that program allowed me to get ALL MY PERSONNAL PHOTOS back when i fought they were lost and long gone forever...

anyway, that's only if it's not a hardware issue (if it's a hardware issue, just do as you've already been adviced)

and burning datas once in a while is also a good thing to keep in mind (along with some ctrl+s every now and then when running an application...)

hope that can be usefull.

take care.

bye.

i have not taken it out of it's case, i can't figure it out...but so far it's not a priority at the moment.

Ok, before we get into all

Ok, before we get into all this really elaborate fixes lets get back to the basics. Most of the time things like this happen is because of corrupted drivers. So, plug in the drive then go down to the bottom right of the desktop and "Safely Eject Hardware". This will clear the drivers for the drive. Now, unplug and replug the drive and see what happens. If this doesn't work then you can try the rest of the ideas on here.

interesting...it took awhile for the "Safely Remove Hardware" to come up on the bottom right...but when I open it, it's blank...it's not listing anything. :(

thanks for the tip though.

i should probably scold my boyfriend who bought it for me. blech...it's the thought that counts but...a shit-tastic external doesn't help me much.

hopefully these remedies will work. maybe i can save it before the shit-tastic-ness starts
