Welcome to the post-PC era

by kaptain nemo | 09/19/2006 | in pseudo-social commentary | social commentary

I have been doing some tracks with this MC... he's a great guy, good values pretty much all around... only he likes to use this epithet "FAG" in his songs. To him, its just a word. I pretty much spelled out, to me "no racism, no sexism, no homophobia" is sort of a credo. You wouldn't use the N-word (he's a white MC I should clarify) so don't diss my gay friends with your semantics.

Of course, this presented no problems. He knew I wasn't censoring him, just saying that i didn't want to work together on any tracks that I found ethically or philosophically inexcusable.

My friend, the engineer on the sessions, explained to me that we are in the "post-PC era". Granted, most everyone seems to be younger than me these days... but, did I miss the dawning of a new era?

Apparently, I am told, this came with the advent of the show South Park. After that, nothing is sacred, nothing is taboo. We have pushed all the envelopes and licked all the... stamps.

So, as I look down my nose through my thick-rimmed glasses at the rest of the world, I can't help but wonder if this is the final irony? PC is replaced by... ironic comedy? Sort of socially-aware, but not taking a stand, lounging around the periphery like vultures waiting to get the last... laugh?

Perhaps, it is like my media professor professed in the 90s. We are indeed "entertaining ourselves to death." And to the detriment of our collective consciousness.

Dude, who cares, pass the remote you stupid Jew.

The word "fag" was never socially unacceptable for about 90% of the population.

I got a bullshit major too dude.

Only in the 2000's.

But we still read Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death. I remember liking the book though.

Some of us do not mind being called sexist names.
Especially by fine pieces of ass like you Nemoman.

I think South Park isn't

I think South Park isn't necessarily a good barometer of modern conscience, just of pointing out hypocrisy sometimes. Those words, I don't know...they're not all reclaimed and not all at the same rate, depending also on geography and context. I feel you on the distaste for it.

I think Carlos Mencia is pretty unfunny.
And That Chapelle fellow is only funny when his show got cancelled by the white folks at the network.
