On hearing the term 'pornsaint', you would be forgiven for thinking that it was one of William Burroughs' 'cut-up' terms like 'soft machine' and 'blade runner'. To the artist Francesco D'Isa, who originated the phrase, it means exactly what it says: "...the pornsaint dwells in the house of the saints, but got there travelling a different way, and came in knocking at another door. If the saint, in a way, obtained the absolute by clambering up on God (any God), the pornsaint obtained it climbing over man. "
This exhibition presents the work of an international group of contemporary artists who, explore the possibility that, porn stars may be "sanctified" by their performances. This year the group have had two critically acclaimed exhibitions (one in Philadelphia, the other in Berlin) and A &D are delighted to present their work in Britain, especially at a time when, due to the introduction of new Censorship restrictions (The Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill), we are once again being asked to define our attitude to Pornography.
The eleven artists represented in this show all have careers outside of the 'pornsaints' project and are as diverse in styles and mediums as they are in gender and nationality. Some embrace digital technology, while others prefer the most traditional of mediums such as oil on board.
The Florentine artist, Francesco D'Isa, is the motivating force behind the group and is responsible for defining the groups artistic ethos and ambitions. Considering the subject matter his 'manifesto' has a surprisingly cerebral approach. D' Isa's first Pornsaint was Casey Parker but he's quick to add that not every porn actress can be a Pornsaint. That point is important to, New York-based artist, Katelan Foisy, who believes in looking into the soul of each potential Pornsaint. Foisy said, "I was intrigued by the duality of the project, I like the idea of combining something considered filthy with something beautiful ".
