This isn't exactly new news. But it's so very upsetting to me. The big debate since this story broke is the St. Charles Journal's decision not to post the name of the family who created the fake account.
Sad. Just sad.
The original writer of the article got tricked into revealing their names a few days later I think.
Their names are Curt and Lori Drew.
Apparently there is already a huge Internet hate campaign against these people.

I don't know if I'm understand this right...even though no charges have been filed against the family, they should be accorded the rights/position of "suspects" such as anonymity until charges are formally pressed? Also, kids?
I understand a desire by the paper to want to not end up a NY Post mudslinging bonanzafucker, but still...I can't shake off the feeling that this is a somewhat feeble attempt by the paper to justify a form of self-censorship to maintain some sort of hometown status at the cost of and fragmented sense of journalistit integrity and general outrage that people (such as myself) feel over the Megan Meier case.
Maybe I'm just putting too much thought and vitriol into this.
I think, sadly, the only thing they are legally guilty of is being complete fuckballs. Total assholes.
and seriously, if the newspaper started printing all the names of asshole fuckballs in the world who have done irreparable harm to another person, - left a deep emotional or physical scar or even lead to a slower life ruining self destruction, if not outright suicide - which one of us would be exempt from that list?
I am not defending these heaps of shit's behaviors or motives or anything of the sort, rather I am just trying to point out that it is not a crime to psychologically tease, fuck with or otherwise destroy another human being.
No, that's understandable...at least on understanding you're not defending anything here.
Still, "bullying epidemics" in schools have warranted harsher looks at social dynamics in school environments as well as at teens in general...bullying in general can have terrible fucking effects on victims and the internet doesn't make it any easier on them.
