Geneva13, Boxers, and Extreme Make-over

by KPunk | 08/18/2008 | in boxing | mainstream media | zine

So, a few of you know that issue #3 of Geneva13 featured a cover story of the Geneva Boxing Club, the owners/coaches, and a few of their star boxers. Basically, Tim Hill and his wife Michelle, started a boxing club to help troubled kids in the area. They practice in this amazing pit of a building. They have even adopted one of the boxers to help get him out of a bad home environment (his brother just got sentenced for murder). Anyway, the zine ran a cover story with interviews about the Hills and the boxers. Surprisingly, the club is not that well-known by most people in town.

One of the readers was moved to tears when she read the story and decided she wanted to do something for the Hills. So what does she do? She nominates them for the tv show Extreme Home Makeover. We get contacted by the show's producers who want to see the zine. The Hills make the short-list.

This morning at 9:10 am, the tv show crews pulled up in front of the Hill's house and announced that they were the winners (the Hill's actually knew several days ago and the show helped them pack up and move their stuff out under the cover of darkness). So the construction people are in town. They are tearing down the house and building a new one, complete with a state-of-the-art boxing gym in the back. The town is crawling with media and construction workers. Geneva has gone ape-shit over this.

The power of a zine.

That pretty boy would probably call it a zIne instead of a zEEn.

And I am the definition of sell-out.
I'm going to make a fortune in this zine business.
You hear me? A FORTUNE.

when I heard Ginny Ryan say on the teevee, "A Geneva family will be featured on Extreme Home Makeover" I thought, "I wonder if it's Kpunk?" and then laughed at myself.
I'm totally freaked out that there actually is a connection.

Huh, I just noticed this post. At first I thought you were selling Geneva 13 boxer shorts... Anyways, you should do a story on me. I could use some new hardwood floors. Maybe cork or bamboo... I'll discuss it with Ty when he gets here.
