My 2007 reading list.

by meabsolutely | 01/01/2008

This year I read 29 books which equals 10,370 pages or 28 pages a day. The bold books are non-fiction. Part of my problem is that I read parts of books and then put them down with every intention of picking them back up, but I sometimes don't. I can think of at least 12 books that I haven't finished, but want to, just from this year. I didn't get to my 50 book goal, and I didn't read quite as much as I did last year, but I was far busier this year. So here is the list:

1) Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling
2) Harry Potter and the Order Of The Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
3) Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire by J.K. Rowling
4) Assassination Vacation By Sarah Vowell
5) Spindle's End by Robin McKinley
6) Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
7) The Other Boleyn Girl Philippa Gregory
8) Pledged by Alexandra Robbins
9) Anne Of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
10) Hard Living On Clay Street by Joseph T. Howell
11) Anne Of Avonlea by Lucy Maud Montgomery
12) The a - z of Non-Sexist Language by Margaret Doyle
13) Can't Buy My Love by Jean Kilbourne
14) White Like Me by Tim Wise
15) Eragon by Christopher Paolini
16) Eldest by Christopher Paolini
17) Notes On A Scandal by Zoe Heller
18) Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
19) Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
20) Hairstyles of the Damned by Joe Memo
21) Sunshine by Robin McKinley
22) The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
23) Giraffes? Giraffes! by Dr. Haggis-On-Whey
24) Shade's Children by Garth Nix
25)The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper
26) Your Disgusting Head by Dr. Haggis-On-Whey
27) Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper
28) Greenwitch by Susan Cooper
29) The Grey King by Susan Cooper

I see a trend there

I'm currently reading Hairstyles of the Damned because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. And admittedly I'm not very far into it, but I'm feeling rather underwhelmed. Does it get better?
It seems like he is trying to channel Nick Hornby at times. And, I know it came out after Hairstyles, but Dr. Frank Portman's King Dork was strikingly better. But again, I'm only 75-100 pages in so these are tentative impressions.

I had a hard time getting into Hairstyles of the Damned, but I pushed through it since I loved The Boy Detective Fails so much. There were some parts toward the end that I appreciated, but I don't think I will be reading it again any time soon.

Best book I came across this year was Never Again by Doug Nuffer. Usually I'm pretty anti self indulgent postmoderny gibberish, but this is damn good gibberish in my estimation. The worst book I had the misfortune to read was Ten Thousand Penises In Your Ear by some guy I can't be bothered to Google. New lows for humanity and a complete waste of a perfectly good title. My brother, whose going through some born again capitalist gold standard endorsing, Ron Paul supporting phase, got me a copy of Atlas Shrugged for X-Mas. Now I kinda have to read it. Thanks a lot, dick.

I liked King Dork, too, but it after having a number of people I know hype it to the extreme, I was slightly disappointed.

I was really unimpressed with Hairstyles of the Damned. I'm a pretty big fan of the young adult journal style of novel, but this was a very generic one with an added element of pandering towards aging punks. Admittedly, it's been years since I've read it, but I remember liking Shampoo Planet by Douglas Coupland much more.
