Greetings from inside the clinic

by Miranda Bastard | 01/18/2008 | in boredom | medical studies | not being allowed to kick people in the head | nothing

So I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I'm doing a paid 2-week medical study at a clinic 45 minutes from my city. I checked in at 4pm today. It's been sort of weird so far. Someone I used to hang out with is in the study with me, which is sort of cool. Everyone else is really quiet.

I expect to be really bored for the next couple weeks. I've brought an entire duffel bag of books, zines, and tapes.

I'll let you guys know if I end up growing a tail or gaining superpowers or something.

p.s. Let's have a show of hands: how many of you thought "the clinic" in this blog's title was referring to rehab?

You don't strike me as the kind of person who would use, so it didn;t occur to me.

I'm not sure I understand what you're doing. Aren't you going to be a mechanic?

I'm being a human lab rat in order to earn some much-needed money. I'm not starting up school again until summer.

Awesome. I wanted to do this, but I think they turned down my application because I said I was a vegetarian.

For some reason, in my inebriated state, I thought you were interning at an abortion clinic or some shit.

When I saw the title of the blog, I thought it was rehab. Then I saw it was posted by you and, like Aaron, I immediately assumed it was something else.

Are they giving you hourly doses of experimental drugs? You've got to keep updating us regularly. I'm fascinated about how that whole scheme works. And how much money are we actually talking about?

What are the negative side effects of whatever you're testing?

Man, that'd be sweet to intern at an abortion clinic. I watched one being performed (and got to witness all the preliminary stuff too) when I worked at PP.

They're giving me twice daily doses of a medication and checking whether or not it affects my blood pressure.

They do reject you if you tell them you're vegetarian, but they also don't force you to eat everything on your plate.

That's one of the negative side effects of life: you could die.

p.s. to whoever was asking about the $$$: $2200 for a 12 day stay (where I'm provided a free place to stay and free food) is not too shabby.

I've always been tempted to do one of those for a quick buck. Some of the drug trials seemed a bit scary, but I still wouldn't mind doing the sleep studies where they basically confuse you into not knowing what time it is and then make sleep and wake on bizarre schedules. I actually got a call from CliniLabs just a couple of days ago asking me if I was still interested, which took me by surprise because the last time I had seriously looked into it was over 3 years ago. When she heard the surprise in my voice, the woman who called said: "What? Did you forget how hard up you were 3 years ago?"
When I lived into Michigan, I used to make $120 a week selling plasma at the Bayer Center in Ypsilanti. Still one of the best "jobs" I've ever had. And free lemonade!

Selling plasma sucks.

Selling plasma does indeed suck. You guys saw the picture of my arm in that other thread, right? Ugh.

This trial isn't all that scary. 1300 people have already taken it, and not had major side effects. And even if it does end up affecting my blood pressure, I have really healthy, low blood pressure so I'd still be well within the healthy range.

My friend who was in it with me got booted because of liver enzymes, though, which means that it's going to be a bit more boring.

I don't know, I'd rather sit on my ass and get my bodily fluids sucked out with a bunch of alchies for half an hour twice a week than do just about anything for minimum wage. But I don't bruise easily so I didn't get all junky looking-- though heroin chic was the look at the time, so that would've been a bonus. Now that I think about it, it was only 60 bucks/week. I'd do it again.

Hang in there and think about the $$$.

I don't bruise easily either. The nasty junky looking bit was from them puncturing the vein on both sides because they are sadistic and incompetent. The blood got all in the soft tissue, where there wasn't room for it, so I got a whole lotta nasty bruises.

I would have been kicked out for having a fake liver with no enzymes.

and then you would be bruised AND sadder than you are now, because you would have been MY ride home.
