Inside the clinic pt 2

by Miranda Bastard | 01/20/2008 | in boredom | human lab rats | selling your body to science

So far it hasn't been too bad. We haven't started the medication yet, just done blood draws and bp measures. We had a few hours where we were allowed outside today. Unfortunately it was too cold to just walk around, and what wasn't closed was really boring. About half the people have been sent home for one reason or another. My roommates suck and don't really talk at all, but the rest of the people have opened up quite a bit. The food is terrible also. It's supposed to be low-carb, low-sugar but they do this by giving us tiny portions of high-carb foods. And I keep having to pick meat off of and out of everything. Lame.

I'm getting paid to sit around and listen to music and read MRR, though, which is nice.

I hope the social elements pick up. That is a long time be surrounded by wankers.
But for $2200, I'm sure you will persevere.

They're not so much wankers, just really quiet. And I think I weird them out a bit. Even the non-quiet ones seem to be a bit weirded out by me. Meh. It's okay though. It's really not so bad. And I'm not going crazy yet.

Is it a dormitory setting, or is it more like One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest with just a bunch of cots?

It's a hospital setting. We sleep on hospital beds, 4 to a room. It feels/looks a lot like eating disorder clinics seem to, except that they don't check our trashes or make us finish everything on our trays.

What if it's not a "study?" What if the ad to which you responded was carefully crafted wordplay designed to attract subversive types of various stripes, only to incapacitate them indefinitely? What's really in that food?

Tell us more about the daily routine. Are you always under surveillance? Do they regulate when you sleep and/or exercise? Do you get outside much?
Given my life right now, it sounds like a wonderful vacation.

I could tell you, but I'd have to charge you $9 a minute.

Things are relatively regulated here. Today we:

+got up between 6 and 7
+Had our blood pressures measured
+had blood drawn
+took the first dose of the medication
+had a couple free hours
+took the second dose
+had a couple more free hours
+had our bps measured again
+lunch
+bunch of free time

in about 15 minutes we'll be having dinner, then freetime until the snack at 9:30. Lights out is midnight. We have to stay on the second floor of the clinic and are not allowed to exercise except for walking around the floor. We had a day out on Sunday, but it was cold and most things were closed, so I just walked around with one of the other volunteers until we got too cold, went to the bookstore and bought a magazine, then came back.

I should tell you about the horrible day yesterday. 16 blood draws, 2 dosings, and very little free time. We also had to wear a bp cuff for 24 hours.
