Recommend Punk Bands

So I found all these old cds of local bands from my hometown, and started really craving some new punk music to listen to.

I like stuff that:

-is loud

-is fast

-you can still understand [some of] the lyrics

-bonus points if there's a female singer or deuling male and female singers.

I don't like:

-grind/thrash/anything that seems like a close cousin to heavy metal.

-pop punk

So tell me what to listen to! I don't care if it's older or more recent.

When I think of female fronted punk bands I think of the first wave LA punk bands like the Bags and the Avengers. I think the Bags only put out a single and one compilation track, but that one single (Survive b/w Babylonia Gorgan) is SO FUCKIN good! Then Penetration, the Plasmatics (who are probably a bit close to the metal spectrum).... Have you heard This Is My Fist? Poppy punk, but in a smart, Dillinger Four (who you should also listen to if you haven't - even though none of 'em are lacking Y chromosomes) way. I just recently discovered a British Oi! "girl band" circa 1980 called the GymSlips. That must've been a pretty rough scene for an all female group to come up in... My brain is not working right now...

The Stickmen

Philidelphia band from the 80s. Not punk exactly but loud, fast and really weird. Male and female vox. There's a taster of them here:

http://www.cuneiformrecords.com/bandshtml/stickmen.html

Other than that I no longer know where to get MP3s online for this band. I probably got all my stuff from Post Punk Junk.

another

I just remembered a great german anarcho band called Lost World. They put out an awesome double seven inch called Capitalism Is A Disease and a really good debut full length that are fast loud and melodic, they really sound like no other punk band I've heard. Their second album is supposed to be gloomier and less good...

Hey, try the cd We Rebuilt This City by the band Closet Monster. There Awesomeness is so great that they could totally physically incapacitat a person with a couple power chords, a base riff and their lyrics...and it deserves its own capital letter and everything ^.^

Fucked Up, definitely.

The Measure (SA);

Though I'm biased because I've seen them 3 times and they quote me in their press section. Female and male-fronted sorta country-influenced punk.

Kind of poppy but not really, more akin to what you feel like listening to when you're pounding back shots of something ugly alone at a bar. Good stuff.

More estrogen fueled punk...

Spitboy? I never was too into them when they were around, but listening to them 10 years later, they were pretty fucking good.
The Gits were a great female fronted, beer soaked bluesy punk band from the Northwest.
If you like Naked Aggression, you might like the Voids from LA. And you might not like I Object from Buffalo, even though they're awesome.

I love love love The Gits. Mia Zapata had such a strong and amazing voice.

A couple of my friends are friends with I Object and toured with them, but you're correct in assuming that I don't like their music.

Speaking of The Gits, I've been meaning to ask:

I used to have this version of Another Shot of Whiskey which was a bit rowdier than the regular version and instead of saying "leave me well enough alone", she said "leave me well the fuck alone". I accidently deleted this off my computer and haven't been able to find it again.

Does anyone have it or know which album it's on (although it may be a live recording)?

There's a live version of Another Shot of Whiskey on the re-release of Frenching the Bully. That's what you're thinking of.

Oh my goodness, thank you!

You are Aaron, correct? If so, pandagon.net just posted a piece about Haiti that you might find interesting.

oh...

It might just be mid-90s Chicago nostalgia, but I'd also recommend The Letterbombs. Probably tough to find, and maybe not really worth the effort, but sort of like The Bollweevils with a female singer. If I ever digitize my 7 inches I'll send you copies.

Thank for the tip to Pandagon.

What year did the Letterbombs break up (assuming that they did)? I have a weird feeling that I've seen them play somewhere.
