BETA FEATURE: In My Headphones

Hey folks--

The overwhelming popularity of the "what are you listening to right now" forum topic got me thinking:

What if we could create a content entry for EXACTLY that question? And what if it could be seen on the front page? And what if you could comment?

Well, after a brief flurry of activity, you can now do exactly that! We call it In My Headphones and it's currently still being tested. So TEST IT!

Go to "create content" in the menu and choose "in my headphones" give a song name and a band name and, if you want, some info about why you like it. And boom! There it is.

You can also simply add your song from the link in the "In My Headphones" sidebar item.

This isn't perfect yet, but it's here! So give it a whirl and post back if you run into problems/have ideas!

Thanks,

Dan

I think I've told you this a good dozen times already, but

I would fix it if I could. For whatever reason it is incredibly difficult to change that. To make that little adjustment requires that about six dozen other things get fixed. It makes not a lick of sense to me either and I have, for the last six months, been seeking out an answer that does. Sorry!

In the meantime, what are YOU listening to?

Well, if at first you don't succeed...

You should try some more. I'll remind you again in a few months. Think of me as a really helpful, virtual post-it note.

I'm listening to my fingers type the truth.

COMMENTS! I GOT COMMENTS!

I have yet to use the feature (well, in the sense that I have yet to post what I'm listening to), but I gots a suggestion — howzabout making the poster's name clickable, like they are in posts? I was just looking at some posts, and was all, like, "Hey, I like that song too! Who is this person?" ...only to have my click-borne curiosity poopholed.

Also, uh, this may sound really anal, but in the sidebar, I really liked it when "New Forum Topics" and "Active Forum Topics" were right next to each other.

Does this last part make me sound like a ninny?

Yep, I agree completely. Not sure exactly why it's not doing that to begin with. But that is the end plan. Like I said, this is beta.

Yeah, the placement's still being played with.

Actually...

I just came to work to find a 2-page email containing a sixth round of changes to this stupid booklet I'm laying up. Apparently, my calendars "look like bingo cards."

Where I'm going with this is that now I feel like a jerk for being nitpicky. I have received my cosmic comeuppance!

dude

you're not being nitpicky. The point of asking for feedback is to get feedback.

Suggestions

I too, being a ninny, liked having the 'New Forum Topics' and the "Active Forum Topics" together.

Also, I like the fact that when my cursor goes over the forum topics, it tells me how many comments are there. Is there any way to do that with the "In My Headphones" feature?

Otherwise, this is a very cool addition to the site. Dan, you continue to rock.

i concur

this is pretty cool, especially since the reverse running order of posts on this board (compared to the old one) made it a (admittedly minor) pain to get to the last page of the listening thread.

One suggestion - how about making the artist names clickable for more details? I realise it'd be a colossal pain in the arse to scour the net for websites of every tiny band someone listened to and type in the address, but maybe an automated feature could go straight to the AMG search result for the better known acts?

Or people could just use the comments box I suppose.

Sinker just called me an ass :(

The persecution never ends.

But the idea above me sounds excellent. In fact, instead of doing the whole AMG link thing, which would be OK, why not link to the bands' Web sites, even the more obscure ones.

This is a feature that I always appreciated in the Art for Spastics thread, and I hope that guy never stops updating it.

Could this be the responsibility of someone here? An intern at PP? Is it easy enough to make this happen? Are user-right issues at hand?

This feature is actually a really great idea.
