Against Me: New Wave

Why did they need Butch Vig to "produce" this record? Searching for a Former Clarity, a mediocre record, is genius in comparison.

Seriously unexceptional. I suppose they're trying to walk that thin line between four on the floor Gang of Four dance numbers and Hot Water Music guitar harmonies and vocal whoa-oh-ohs. It all comes off much less interesting than that. And there's some alterna-rock ballads that are real stinkers. I know their corporate paymasters are trying to mold them into the next Clash, but they're strictly Big Audio Dynamite.

yeah, well

The dance floors of the American discotheques are ripe for revolution. It has been 10 years since last an anarchist punk band brought the hope of a Utopian stateless future to the Top 40 in form of "Tub Thumper." If Butch Vig's infinite overdubs and studio trickery can help rekindle the revolutionary hope that Chumbawamba first ignited in the American people, then the disappointment that punk purists like yourself are experienceing is a small price to pay.

And there are a couple of B.A.D. songs that are significantly better than 90% of The Clash's output.

I like it.

Unsurprisingly, I enjoy "New Wave".

It could be alot worse. And it's probably better than "Reinventing Axl Rose" (and I don't just say that to piss off the fanchildren).

The sadness of the record industry..

Yes, the new record is dim and an extreme letdown and totally what I was expecting it to be. The sad thing is the videos of the "making of" on YouTube where the band members just seem miserable about the environment they have entered and remorseful about their decision. I cannot knock them for trying to make some dough to get out of a 260 days a year touring schedule, and hold out hope that they will come to their senses. I predict they bail out of the easy money and their musical integrity will produce another great album on an indie label...

I got to differ with the

I got to differ with the majority sentiments on this thread. I think New Wave is the second best album Against Me ever put out, only behind Axl Rose. Thrash Unreal, White People for Peace and Piss & Vinegar are some of the finest songs they have put out to date. There are some weak moments like Stop!, but all in all I think New Wave is one the best records I have heard in 2007. Just good songs with all the passion they have brought since the beginning.

foiled again

I went and got it just because Aaron hated it so much. And you know what? He's right. It's crap.

I think would be hard to prove in a court of law. However judging by your posts you certainly are a self important, faux omnipotent idiot. Get over yourself and your absolutism. It's just a record.

Had I know this matter was headed for a court of law, I would have been much more diligent about piecing together an airtight case.

As for it being "just a record," I think we all owe you a hearty THANK YOU. Had you not arrived to check our unfettered internet banter, things could have taken a perilous turn for the worse. Next time I'm sure everyone will restrain their post-record listening passion to something more commensurate to the situation. Like thinking quietly to themselves -- or to be entirely responsible, just humming along.

Actually, I have always respected your musical tastes (as stated on this site) until you admitted to liking Interpol. I'll grant you that the first album was initially impressive. But 'Antics' sucked so bad, it made me rethink 'Bright Lights'.

But I just found out that they were just records, so what do I know.

Antics is inferior to Bright Lights but not totally terrible. I mean, in a world that considers The Killers a great band, Antics isn't that bad. It's main flaw is that it's songs were either repetitive or forgettable. Which I guess is pretty bad, but I don't think you know what "suck" means until you've heard their latest record.

Anyway, Interpol was one of those bands that I enjoyed listening to but would never defend as being particularly good. Probably because I'm inherently distrustful of any group that make it a point to dress in dapper suits.

My Review

well, after spending some time with the album as a whole, i come to the conclusion that i enjoy it more than Searching for a Former Clarity. i'll admit to enjoying the poppiness of Thrash Unreal, White People for Peace, and Borne on the FM Waves even if the latter sounds like it shouldn't even belong in their library. The majority of the album does seem like it is from another band altogther though, but, whateveh. I have enjoyed Americans Abroad ever since I heard it off the live album. But of course, it doesn't compare to their older stuff. so, uh, i guess i'd give this a 6/10.

friday, friday, friday, friday...

SWEET JEZUS

just got back from their show...uh, i know i tend to say this with almost every show i go to, but THIS was probably the most intense show i've ever seen, not just because of the band, but the crowd as well. i wish i could have seen them in the past, shiet. of course they didn't play "reinventing axl rose," like they always seem to play live, but, whatever! i may post my pics later.

For reasons I won't go into, I have listened to NEW WAVE seven times in the last four days. I started to rethink my opinion the first time. But no, it is crap. Tedious and overblown in all the wrong ways.
