Five years is a long fucking time.

The day after tomorrow is the 5 year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Five fucking years! A child who was born when the US invaded Iraq would be five years old now! A child who was five years old at the time would be ten years old now, and so on and so forth! Traditionally the 5th anniversary is the wood anniversary. But giving wood seems somehow crass and not a little suggestive. How do you shop for the war the has it all anyways? I mean, this war gets paid $275 million per day, that's upper middle class by anyone's definition, and, I don't know, what, like a set of encyclopedias? I don't even think this war deserves gifts at this point, it's been a total fucking failure after all. The price of oil has increased over 300% for fucks sake! How many people do you have to kill before the price of a scarce non-renewable natural resource stabilizes at $40/barrell, for Christ's sake?! Or for anyone's?! And don't even get me started on all the death and destruction and stuff! At least there seems to be less crazy talk about OPEC pricing that shit in Euros, so the 500,000 to 1,000,000 human lives (what's a couple of 100,000 between friends, right?) haven't been snuffed out completely in vain, I guess.

Anyways, I'm gonna do my part and make an impotent public display of my frustration. There's actually some good shit going on, or at least protest activities that are creative in comparison to the bullshit that the movement has been coming up with for the last 5 years. Blockading the IRS, a couple of recruitment center occupations. It'll be cathartic if nothing else.

Also 's t Patrick's day and, in keeping with my ethnic contractual obligations, I am drinking Jameson out of a styrofoam cup at work.

seriously though...

Today in the class I taught, we were discussing the Chicago 68 convention and 60s protest politics. At the end of class, I read a letter I wrote five years ago that discussed the anti-war march and the following arrest that I took part in five years ago today.

Shit is fucked up.

I was so right.

Yep. Everything I said five years ago has come to pass. And I feel no joy in saying "I told you so." I spent so much time and energy five years ago trying to cause some type of ripple that might so slow the rush to war. I even went on fucking Fox News on the Greta Van Susteran Show. I got phoned in death threats five years ago for my anti-war activities.
I was so right too. So why do I feel so tired and useless. Please, don't answer that.

You were really on the faux news? How did you manage that?

Why is it that I always assumed that this woman's name was Greta Van Zant?

And why do I feel like she was a lesbian tennis player?

All I know is that I had a crazy David Lynch-style hairstyle going on. I can't even stand to watch the video tape of the interaction because I relive how nervous I was at the time (it was live). But it's true. It was my 15 minutes of fame. Actually it was three days of fame because it began when I was asked to write a "dissenting Op-Ed" for US Today. The crazy fucking thing was that they wouldn't let me see their Op-Ed -- the Op-Ed I was supposedly dissenting against. It was a good lesson in understanding the importance of controlling and framing public discourse. But someone at Fox News read the piece and decided I would make good fodder for the show. A few days earlier, NYTimes had reported how Fox News was intentionally going after lefty people to belittle on the channel. So I knew exactly what I was getting into. She asked me one question and Greta tried to cut me off after less than 10 seconds in. But I refused to be shut down and just talked over her the whole time. They even kept me on for the next segment because I think it was good entertainment: I just stuck to my script and ignored Greta's attempt to badger me.
I was in a studio in Cleveland and I couldn't see any thing. All I had was Greta's voice in my ear, so I missed all the faces she was pulling. I would love to go back on the show and talk about all the ways I was right, but they would never put me on again. And I don't think I'd ever whore myself out like that again.

Hey K, that's not bad for a sheep farming landscaper. I took the day off and lent another warm body to the cause of standing around in the cold rain and screaming in frustration-- and all I got was this lousy pneumonia, the sneaking suspicion that people still don't give a fuck and the realization that I don't even get a kick out of baiting cops anymore. Color me old and cynical.

I don't get much out of the cathartic aspect of public protests anymore. It just strikes me as such a performance, rooted in some nostalgia for an idealized 1960s political stance (protests were pretty much ineffectual then too). But I'm concerned that you no longer get any glee from baiting cops. That sounds serious.

And another thing, if it's an anti-war protest, let's keep it an anti-war protest, okay? I'm tired of showing up and marching alongside 500 different contingents expressing issues running the gamut of lefty politics. I know you want to free Leonard Peltier, but let's keep it focused people!

And I'm sure I'll rediscover the simple joys of fucking with pigs as soon as they rediscover the simple joys not carrying machine guns and video cameras.

Amen, on all accounts.

(Though I get some joy out of video taping and photographing the cops back. It drives them crazy.)
