something else i always wondered

Should "beatnik" or "beatnick" be the preferred spelling. I assume the prior since it is Russian-derived (Sputnik via Herb Caen). But I have always felt fond of "beatnick" the way I feel fond of "cigaret."

Should read "Come join the world of the hipsters . . . the beatniks . . . the sickniks." Or "sicknicks." I hope the spirit came through, anyway.

maybe a sicknik

is a poor blighter who is too mentally ill to function in straight society. In which case I am one already and have been for some time. But there was already a perfectly good word "lunatic." I kind of want to know what else "sicknik" "brings to the table," as they say in the straight world.

Beats became Beatniks after Sputnik. It was an intentional move by conservatives in the US to cast Beats as Communist sympathizers. I'm always amazed that it worked so well, in the sense that the label stuck (though I don't know how effective it was at discrediting an already marginal and largely discredited subculture).

Sickniks, now that is team I can play for, whoever they may be.

And I'm adding 'sicknik' to my list of words I'm going to slip into conversations at the next soul crushing social gathering I go to. Which will be tomorrow night actually.

When I read the heading, I suddenly flashed to the Elvis movie Easy Come, Easy Go. If that wasn't a line from that flick, it should have been.
