What Do You Remember About 1993

This was fifteen years ago. I probably should put this in my already established "Late-'80s-Early-'90s Nostalgia" thread but nobody wanted to respond to that thread. So I will make another thread with likely no more chance of success. We did cover Cross Colours somewhere though.

At this point in time (about '91-'93 actually) I was really into William Gibson, so I think of these as "the cyberpunk years." Dial-up internet in my house was only a few months away. I think I was still playing the Neuromancer game ("soundtrack by DEVO") on my Apple ][gs although I never did beat it. I also think I was playing a lot of Zany Golf but that was more like 1990. These things tend to compress together in your memory after a while. I do remember that it was around this time that I became sad that my Apple ][gs was growing hopelessly obsolete, but I remained very attached to it. I even briefly shopped for 486 PCs and felt very guilty.

I think

This was the year I got braces, and, if you ask my god damn opinion, I didn't even need them. I remember initially feeling like I couldn't close my mouth and feeling extremely awkward about having them. Then, very quickly, I actually began to think that I didn't look so bad. That is until gym class when I got called a faggot by one of those uber cool, rat-tail and hair metal shirt dudes. Seventh grade was wonderful.

I also remember playing King's Quest 5 a lot, and also that one game that was like a Star Wars rip off but I can't recall the name. Um, and I was listening to Tool's Undertow a lot. And I went to Jamaica that Christmas and got stung by a jellyfish. While there, my step dad unironically adopted a Jamaican accent when talking to natives. And by natives I mean the 20 or so they allowed onto the resort to work.

I would probably kill myself within an hour if I had to relive any random day in 1993.

everybody gets called a faggot in junior high

I like how everybody who had braces complains about the back-then trauma. Your parents were right. Try being a snaggle-toothed monster as an adult and see how you like that. Although in fairness I doubt my self-image would be any better even if my teeth were.

I recall 1993 as being mostly pretty good, but I was out of junior high by then. High school was comparatively abuse-less but there were other sporadic interludes of abuse from my fellow creatures to follow, lasting until the present day. Until I quit working, anyway. Why is it that our social order seems to be fundamentally based on abuse? I blame the Fascinators.

I remember...

Mostly smoking dope and listening to Slapshot. Started going to shows on a regular basis to catch the corpse rattle of late 80's hardcore. Yuppicide, Shelter, SFA, Assuck, SOIA, Gang Green, Biohazard... puke.. But probably the best shows I saw that year were the Swirlies, The Lemonheads and the Dead Milkmen on the Soul Rotation tour. I also stopped getting called a faggot on a daily basis around this time, but the damage had already been done. I didn't have much use for video games or computers. I just didn't have the attention span for it. I couldn't play a video game for more than 10 minutes without getting antsy and frustrated. I didn't use the internet until 1998 when I discovered irc and the relative convenience of only having to wait several minutes to download a pretty picture of a naked lady... my fascination lasted a few weeks and I didn't use a computer again until the next millenium.

I think I spent at least 1/4 of that year in the fetal position contemplating suicide with Life of Agony's River Runs Red in the background.

Also, shoulder tapping crackheads outside the packy to get them to buy forties. "They KNOW this shit ain't for me!" "C'mon... I'll give you a dollar..."

And for some inexplicable reason, spending a lot of time chain smoking in froofy coffee shops with the other alterna-nerds and eating sushi.

Sandman comics...

This was also the year that I first read the Illuminatus Trilogy and that fucked up my impressionable, unstable adolescent mind as well...

This was the year I dropped out of highschool, and moved to America for the first time. I was listening to Green Day's Kerplunk, and Crimpshrine a lot. I was trying to write a sci-fi novel and was playing drums in a band.

This was also the first time I tried to get sober. It lasted for two years.

I read a lot of biographies about the Cambridge spies, and silent movie actresses. I met my first ever boyfriend. My first ever boyfriend and I broke up. I played a lot of Sega (Sonic the Hedgehog, Shining Quest, Clay Fighters, Sewer Shark). I bolted steel pads and bits of computer hardware to my leather jacket (cyberpunx!)

1994 is the year that all hell broke loose for me.
1993 was just the beginning.

But yeah, I was drunk an awful lot that winter, usually right in the middle of the morning through to evening. I dropped out of college (with 4 classes to go) and started a life of active scumfuckery.

In 1993 I:

-was 6 years old and in 1st grade
-went to Arizona to visit my great-grandmother, whom I decided I hated because she spanked me for being sinful and unlady-like
-had eye surgery
-played baseball with my brother a lot
-was grounded for a long time after I grabbed some scissors and cut off all of my hair when my dad was out of the room. My mom made me get my ears pierced so people wouldn't think I was a boy.
-spent a lot of time in Bob's auto garage

I think that's the year I moved to Seattle and sang in a straight edge band... even though I was drinking heavily.

I lost my edge, grew out my hair, broke up my melodi-core band and broke up with my girlfriend of two years, both of which bummed me out. I listened to a ton of Shudder to Think. I started going to bars, started a new straight-up rock band and lived with my sister and future brother-in-law, with whom I smoked a ton of dope and played a lot of Mortal Kombat.

did mortal kombat debut in 1992

or '93? I strongly associate it with '93. That's the year it got huge -- in Arizona, anyway. We were not always on the bleeding edge of the coastal trends. That's why I tend to think fads debuted a year or two later than they actually did.

I was in the 4th grade, living in Austin, TX. My dad was in Westfield, MA, making things ready for the rest of us to move into the place he'd found. My mom, my sister and myself were living in an apartment complex called Fountain Terrace. Our neighbors were: a friendly but alcoholic gay couple whose cat had feline leukemia, a Polish family whose daughter was friends with my sister and introduced us to Super Mario Bros., a dirty hippie and his girlfriend who was from India, and a lesbian couple who joked constantly about how much they hated men. The school I went to was for some reason inside a series of trailers, where the students sat in cubicles. For some reason, a high percentage of the students had fucked up family lives and behavioral issues, including one kid who openly used racial epithets and the vilest possible language in front of the buss matron, seemingly for the sole purpose of pissing her off.

I was a bartender at a Mexican restaurant. My previous band broke up and for some reason I had a guitar in the back of my crappy Honda Accord. A cook at work saw it and asked if I played. I said no, I was a vocalist. We decided to form a band and got a waiter who played bass to join us. It took ages to find a decent drummer (we ended up with an amazing one), and then 1993 spirals into a blur of late night practices, drinking massive amounts of malt liquor, driving ridiculous distances to play to a handful of people, and passing out on the floor of someone's house. It was a very good year.

I was ten.

I moved out of the U.S. of A (don't stress though, I'm back) and was a few years from becoming the awkward dorky punk rock bro I am now, and was just a general awkward mess who read a lot of fantasy novels and X-Men comics.

hmm. i think i was in 7th or

hmm. i think i was in 7th or 8th grade. I played soccer, basketball and softball, sitting on the bench most of the time. I was doing a lot of babysitting and might have been apprenticing in my moms upholstery shop. I think I got caught cheating on a test and had to write a letter to my parents letting them know that. I visited Washington DC, Virginia Beach, and Chinqategue (that place that has wild ponies off the coast of VA). I stole my dads clothes to wear to school. I had lots of crushes but was wayyyy too shy to tell any of them I liked them...but i remember one of them smooching me and telling me he loved me in the middle of D.A.R.E! I was going to perform as an alcoholic bum in a play but couldn't cuz of my trip to DC and VA. I remember I had a bone thugs and harmony cassette. Some Calypso band played in our gym/cafeteria. I played the trumpet and was first chair...but sat in second because the second chair was a bully and wanted to look cool. I didn't really care cuz I knew I was better than him and that was all that mattered......and oh yeah...O.M.! I think that was the year my team finally made it to state...we had to build machines and make a skit about dinosaurs...and at the state competition we got into an argument during spontaneous so obviously we came in dead last.

She kept having heart attacks so she was staying with us...and my mom made us all go vegetarian and made a lot of stuff out of this healthy heart cookbook and all of it made me gag.

I was young and cute and a party girl. My life revolved around shows, raves, parties. I lived alone and danced all the time. Got carpel tunnel syndrome from making cookies. Worked a daycare center for a while. Got a tattoo and a pregnant cat. The cat I have now was born. My sister moved here and got pregnant. I met my friend Karen and we went out for 67 nights in row. I never had any money but I had tons of fun. I was in love with a jerk. I had one goofy boyfriend and one nice boyfriend, but I was still in love with the jerk. Until March of that year I ate mostly cookies from work, from March until May I lived on leftover soup, rolls and pastries from my sister's job. I swear I lived off one pound of lentils, a box of breadcrumbs and a steady supply of Golden Anniversary malt liquor the entire summer. In the fall and winter I had a part time job so I could buy elbow maccaroni and popcorn, which I supplemented by dating, which supplied a few good meals. I went on a lot of dates that year. I remember having a lot of fun but also being really unhappy.

93 was the year I got my hair cut off. Mine was about as long as Gordon describes, and I miss it terribly.

It was also the year I finished university, and realised that not only was fluency in Latin and Ancient Greek no use with the ladies, it also counted for sweet FA when trying to get a job, so I signed on, and filled my days doing volunteer conservaton work with a couple of mates and assorted day release cases, most of whom I was amazed were let anywhere near a billhook. If ever you are in the South Hams area of England, and find yourself on a woodland path with wooden steps built into the upward slope, chances are I built them.

Spent most of my nights in The King's Head on Bretonside (don't bother looking for it, it's not there anymore), which was Plymouth's main stroke only pub for punks and crusties.

Read pretty much every book in the Plymouth library system (note to those above: as a fully fledged SF geek, I can tell you cyberpunk was SO over by 1993), and then started again.

Went up on the moors all winter and arsed about in the snow.

Listened to loads of Culture Shock, Bender, AOS3, Blyth Power, Poisoned Electrick Head and other festy bands that required chemical assistance to enjoy.

Started getting involved in the anti-Criminal Justice Bill movement, and went veggie.

1994: More of the same

1995: oh shit, real life

No seriously, I worked at a bakery. Milled our own wheat, sponge and dough method. Really cool science. The place got bought out. The owner gleaned my knowledge and then fired me over one mistake siting a 90 day probation clause since I was a new employee for a new company.

Fucker.

Less tha six months later I sat across the street smoking a doob as the repo men loaded up all the equipment into a semi. They went outta biz. HAHAHAHA!
