Backstage Stories

Acquaintance of mine was talking to Dave Grohl backstage after a Foo Fighters show, and asked him if he'd been in any bands before.

Recently I heard that a guy with a huge crush on Siouxie Sioux waited around for ages by the stage door, and when she came through he said "Can I talk to you for just a second?" She looked at her watch, looked back, and said "Time's up" and walked off.

Old friend of mine went backstage to try to talk to Tom Waits. He also said "Hey, I just want to talk to you for a minute" But Waits was being carried by the shoulders by two roadies. All he said was "piss off kid", and then he vomited all over himself.

I've never actually been backstage after a show. But it doesn't sound like I'm missing much.

I don't think they count as stories

If you didn't experience them yourself.

I went backstage a lot when I was dating a ballerina.

I met leon redbone backstage once. But he was too drunk to talk to me. His wife/girlfriend was really nice tho. She had a lot to say about Leon's drunkardly ways, which if he were sober enough to have understood, I do not think he woul dhave apprieciated.

My only recent backstage story

Through a friend, I saw Cecil Tay_lor at the Lincoln Jazz Center. We had box seats at the edge of the stage, face to face with Cecil. I wouldn't be surprised if we were placed there as eye candy for Cecil to inspire tone clusters. After the concert (which was over my head completely), we hung out back stage and listened to the recording of the concert in an XM radio recording suite. The manager of Henry Gr_imes complained about not signing off on a recording but nothing really came of it. Then Cecil's manager asked me to carry the champagne to a club around the corner. Everyone soon got bored of the club (being senior citizens and also the club sucked) and we went to Cecil's house and listened to him rattle off hour long monologues on jazz history. Being largely ignorant of jazz, I just let the flow of words wash over me. Hours later, I was stalling a cab as they tried to detain us into the early morning. In retrospect, I think we might have been being pimped. If he shared the coke, maybe I would have given into his polyrhythm.

Not mine, but, you know...

My old boss at the record store got backstage at a Cheap Trick show sometime in the early 80s in New Orleans — he was about 19 at the time. He was drunk when he got backstage, and was thoroughly shitfaced by the time Cheap Trick even showed themselves to the people hanging out backstage. As he put it: "I think I barfed on Rick Neilsen. All I remember is looking down at those checkered shoes and feeling really nauseous..."

He woke up a few hours later in a nearby alley with the living shit beat out of him. Some good samaritan guy found him there, helped him up, and took him back to his apartment so he could wake up/clean up/sober up. After my boss had sobered up, the two guys started talking, and eventually discovered that they had been pen pals when they were kids. NO SHIT.

Puke

I would've been more inclined to puke all over Robin Zanders' sensible Spiegel slacks.

I helped be a stage hand for a few shows even though I had no clue what I was doing. I was an unpaid intern in a shitty venue's talent department if you must know, so I needed some cash.

While I guess I got to be backstage for all of these things, as they were all in venues that were large enough to have actual backstages, the only backstagey thing that I ever walked into was a near double-Asian-pleather-titted-groping session between two hoochied-out Asian girls and the lead singer of Monster Magnet. I was just like "here's your water," and then scuttled away.

On the first Fugazi tour a friend of mine asked Ian if they had any t-shirts for sale. "You should be into the band, not the t-shirt." Umm, okay.
