have i mentioned that i just won a teaching award from the university?
getting drunk and grading papers...
I assign a research paper on the 60s for my US 1865-present survey. I'm working on redesigning the course right now. I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but I'm teaching it the next three semesters. I'm already way late with text selection.
I am a crappy teacher. I HATES grading. HATES it.
I just... I dunno... the courses that I've taught for a few semesters now I feel sort of okay about but it seems to take so long to feel like I even remotely know what I'm doing.
I teach intro level survey classes so unless you're into text books...
Actually I don't really use textbooks in my women's studies or world 1500-present history class and I'm trying to move away from them for the next year of US history but I don't know what I'm going to use instead. I'd love to find a good novel or memoir to at least use as a supplemental.
I'd also love to quit or jump off a bridge or something. I miss secretarial work. I miss money. I miss having something remotely like a life.
I read this great history book about imperialism, nationalism and the foundation of the American feminist movement. I thought it would be good for a class in Women's Studies and/or American History.
You should show John's posts to your women's studies students...
I've wanted to read that (maybe someday I will have time... sigh!)
But it would be way over the heads and probably somewhat counterproductive for my classes which are all intro-level survey classes that fulfil general education requirements. probably less than 2% of the students are even remotely interested and at least 75% are actively hostile to both of my departments.
My students routinely use children's books as sources for their papers.
