favorite music docs

I think I tried to start a similar thread awhile ago, but whatever...

"We Jam Econo" about the Minutemen was pretty damn good. I wish I could ride around town with Mike Watt in his van.

"What Poor Gods We Do Make" about Naked Raygun was surprisingly good. Clearly a labor of love with good editing and direction. This is my current template for how to make a good music doc.

I recently re-watched the first "Decline and Fall of Western Civilization" and was impressed with how well it still stands up over time.

I never heard about the

I never heard about the Naked Raygun doc. We Jam Econo was awesome. But the only "music doc" I can watch over and over is this one:

Roots Rock Reggae - Inside the Jamaican Music Scene. I think it stands up as a documentary even if you're not into the music.

I must confess...

...I haven't seen all of "We Jam Econo".

However, "Instrument" is pretty bitchin'.

Best part of "Instrument" was the footage from the junior high school interview, no?

I liked "The Future Is Unwritten" and "Westway to the World" a lot. I also liked "Dig!" and "End of the Century".

I don't know 'Dig!'
I've got 'Future is Unwritten' but haven't had the chance to sit down and watch it.
I was mildly disappointed by 'Westway,' but can't really explain why. Not enough interview footage? Too superficial? I dunno.
'End of the Century' was great. The bad blood between them was amazing. And DeeDee was heart-breakingly pathetic.

man, I - like a lot of people I'm sure - did A LOT of drugs with Brian Jonestown. Those guys would party really hard at the Grog back when I was drinking there every night.

maybe you have to have no previous history with either band

in order to enjoy DIG! I mean, clearly Newcombe is an awful asshole but yet I did not want to murder him in his sleep like I did all of the Warhols. Apparently Robert Christgau and I saw two entirely different movies that were both entitled DIG!

oh don't get me wrong.

i hate both bands equally.

i guess my hate of brian jonestown massacre stems from a friends watching said movie and then trying his hardest to emulate anton.

i.e.

becoming a drunk drug addicted poor song writing big sunglasses wearing shithead.

I'd say Dig!

Was worth seeing just for the scene where Anton kicks the audience dude square in the forehead with the toe of his boot. Beautiful.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston was good. I liked the Dead Moon doc a lot too (can't remember the title though).

Dig! was horrible. I don't like the music of either band, the Dandy Warhols are really annoying as people, and I wasn't at all entertained by Anton's asshole antics (alliteration hoy!).

New York Doll-Arthur Kane

New York Doll-Arthur Kane had certainly seen some of the lowest lows during his post-Doll life. It was wonderful to see him fulfill his dream to reconcile/perform again with David Johanson.

The Devil and Daniel Johnson was very eye-opening to me.

Gimme Shelter

End of The Century

American Hardcore-Even though it came nowhere close to the depth of the book.

The Kids Are Alright-Man, I wish they would just simply re-release/re-master Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy. That was the greatest, greatest hits LP ever.

"Dig" is great...it's like watching a train run over a car trunk full of Nazi chickens. You know it's gonna be painful and yet, so delicious to watch as life just go downhill and society slips one more rung down on the ladder to an entropic death.

My friend Dustin once wrote a MySpace blog about Brian Jonestown Massacre fans and it turned into, well, it was funny.

Dustin's original post:

"Anton and the fish people

The fans of the Brian Jonestown Massacre are worse than deadheads. Neo-Hippies pretending to be hip, while the whole time they are at the show they know somewhere deep down that the music is boring them to tears, and they'd really rather go home. They can't leave though, because they have social climbing and piles of coke to do. Keep tapping your toes and dying your hair black. You're one step away from riding a Vespa, and two steps away from attending a Phish concert."

Anton's response:

ha-ha!

you all can eat my shit but be warned...
you might have to work out before you can take me....(and no,shit-talking online does not count )

i'm sure i can defete anyone of you in any form of combat you choose.

and if anyone of you ever do anything with your life...i will praise you...

as it is you are spoiled little hittler youth but worse....

you have zero honor and are quite un-magical.

keep talking about me,my fame grows....

keep posting your photos and talking about me...

digital wanted posters..

fuck you and your dads for fucking you....

you are broken vessals

off topic, on topic

Daisy: that's fucking fabulous.

On topic, "End of the Century" is really good, and then that little MC5 doc I saw at the Chicago Documentary Film Festival but that never got music rights and so never saw theatrical release. It was awesome.

Not a documentary...a film with actors portraying real life personalities. That plus viewing AI destroys all credibility.
