Pros -

1 - vaguely credible anti "greed in the music industry" stance
2 - really is very, very ugly
3 - good singing voice
4 - severals songs are incredibly catchy
5 - Was in the Wilburys and therefore worked with Bob Dylan

Cons -

1 - cheesy MOR backing vocals and keyboards
2 - worked with Jeff Lynne (see Con 1, and also Pro 4)
3 - strays into George Thorogood territory on some tracks and should give blues rock a miss
4 - all this happened fifteen years ago
5 - Was in the Wilburys and therefore worked with Roy Orbison

Result: Tie

correction

All connections to the Wilburys need to be listed in the Con category, esp. 'worked with Bob Dylan.'

Hey man, you forgot his role in Kevin Costner's cinematic "masterpiece" Waterworld.

noelle asked if we would lose a lot of punk points if we went to see the upcoming Tom Petty concert.

I have to, regretfully, inform her that it appears we would not.

Hey, it's my recent obsession, not yours. I like Dylan.

Also: John you would lose punk points but get them back again for just not caring what anyone thinks of you.

I like a lot of his older stuff. And by "Older," I mean "early stuff."

Although I hesitate to recommend any tribute album to anyone, just because they invariably leave one disappointed and or angry, the Tom Petty tribute that was done in the early 90s should be picked up in a cut-out bin (pay no more than $3) if not for any other reason than to hear Engine Kid's version of "Breakdown."
