Mormons=Insane or just stupid?

I went to the Hill Cumorah pageant last night. For those of you not in the know, the outdoor pageant is a re-enactment of the story of the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormons, reportedly found the metal plates of the Book near Palmyra, NY, which is between Geneva and Rochester (unfortunately he misplaced them after he 'translated' them). Since moving here, people have told us we have to go to see the enormous production: cast of 600+, elaborate set, pyrotechnics, seating for 8,000+, etc. The spectacle was worth it, but the actual story is simply unbelievable. As in: impossible to fucking believe. Who could believe this invention of a huckster? Which leaves me to believe that Mormons are either insane or stupid.

I'm voting 'stupid.'

because all other religions are so thoroughly credible

All the Mormons I have ever met have been very nice people, if not necessarily what you would call brilliant. And Jack Mormons are the best.

I've met lots of friendly

I've met lots of friendly Mormons too. That's not my point.

And yes, other religions are also ridiculous. But I can have a conversation with a non-Mormon Christian or a Muslim because Jesus and Mohammed are both legitimate historical figures. But Joseph Smith simply invented shit up. Seriously, have you read the 'historical' claims being made by Mormons? And let's not get into the racist aspects of the doctrine.

Point taken. And perhaps I am being too hard on Mormons, singling them out of the crowd for abuse when the entire crowd warrants abuse as well. But you'll have to forgive me. I just spent the previous evening in the company of 8,000 (most of which were true believers) watch an absurdly over-the-top performance about a supposed lost tribe of Israel who came to the US, hung out with a post-crucified Jesus, and are the true chosen people of God

Yes, you are right, all religions are based on foolish invention and hokum. The story being pushed by the Mormons just strikes me as being far more absurd than the others.

fair enough

I guess I actually like Mormonism for that very reason -- it is like an enfant terrible provocateur performance artist, sort of the Dada or Situationism of world religion. I enjoy that other cultists get all het up about the ridiculousness of the magic underwear or what have you so as to conceal from themselves the dread knowledge that their e.g. magic cookies are equally ridiculous.

also, i look to a tarot deck for life advice

I guess I have just lived long enough to realize that everything and everybody in this world, including and especially myself, is fundamentally stupid, and so pointing out the relative stupidity of any one stupid thing as against another stupid thing strikes me as splitting hairs. Also I think I am growing to pity (and, pathetically, envy) more than despise the religionists as I age and the fear of death looms. I miss the genuinely feckless/ happy-go-lucky quasi-suicidal years when I really did not give two shits about mortality. Now I am grudgingly watching my sodium intake and switching to decaf with Splenda. What the fuck is that? For those of you with families it makes some sense, but nobody loves me. I guess it is just spite and inertia that makes me want to continue to live. Dying might be too much like hard work.

No, fair enough. I see how one might appreciate the absurdity of the Mormon belief. Yet you appreciate from outside, not subscribe from inside. Which is why we can have a conversation that I would be unable to have with a believer.

I suspect I am actually older than you. And I find that as I get older I waver between the pity and pathetic envy (well put) you describe and a visceral reaction to the True Believers. The latter response is fueled by the increasing evidence that True Believers inflict so much hate, anger and destruction on the world in the name of their True Belief. There is a big difference between those who accept their stupidity and try not to do harmful things and those who are convinced of the righteousness of their actions. I would like to think that I belong in the former category.

See, the trouble with this enlightened position is that you are so afraid of doing harm that you tend not to do anything at all; deliberately inconsequentialize yourself, make like Thoreau at Walden. To put it less charitably, you become kind of a wuss. The true believers are go-getters. They get shit accomplished! Harmful shit!

I know a Mormon guy who never leaves the attic and pisses in a jar because he is too lazy to walk to the bathroom down the hall. He also got fired because he was looking at porn and jerking off at work.

I pretty much use him as a watermark as to where all Mormons end up. I see the Church of Latter Day Saints as a particularly cruel manifestation of American fundamentalism.

Cruel because the church imposes a level of destitute poverty upon a certain proscribed (and heavenly appointed) group of sub-members who are then afforded good works and charity. But all the good works and charity are designed to keep kicking the poor down, pegged into their permenant roles of downtrodden and low upon the earth.

The Church Of Latter Day Saints, much like the Catholic Church, covers up child abuse - and in covering it up or denying it happens actually promotes and encourages it.

But then I tend to take almost the polar opposite opinion of Greg in this regard. I think religion functions only as a closed system of hatred and degradation, offering no hope or solace - only paranoia and self-assured zealotry.

I don't agree that there is no hope or solace in it.

I am this guy without the Mormonism, not that that necessarily invalidates your theory.

Again, how does this differ significantly from the lives of most of us peons under late capitalism? This is basically a reiteration of my argument that all religions are obviously ridiculous and that singling out the LDS as more harmful because they are arguably among the more flamboyantly ridiculous is a concretely weird tendency I have observed in many otherwise right-thinking people.

But then I tend to take almost the polar opposite opinion of Greg in this regard. I think religion functions only as a closed system of hatred and degradation, offering no hope or solace - only paranoia and self-assured zealotry.

Whoa there, hoss. I guess you should know since you are a Right Reverend and all, but please don't construe my envy of something as a defense of it. I envy Dick Cheney too. I envy in particular the highly rarefied delusionality that allows someone to believe that everything in life is going according to some divine plan and that they will see their loved ones again after death. It is difficult for me to exercise too much contempt for someone else's delusions when I myself am delusional in many respects -- just not lucky enough to be in this particular respect that might make me less miserable. But having never actually been religious myself, I only have some vague idea of what it is to be religious rather than knowing first-hand what it is to be religious, so you may be on point.

Right. I misread your position on this. I agree and disagree. I agree that singling out the LDS is silly, but I think necessary. As much as it is necessary to challenge all the silly space creature theories that justify so much hatred and ill works.

I mean I can't abide any of the god fearing religious much any more. But then on a daily basis, I have to look up and read bible passages for some dude that calls the library. Help cranky ministers look for gob-mint grants to start their churches and buy a new Cadillac, or reserve copies of Joel Orsteen's prosperity gospel screed.

I've lost patience.

Hey did you guys ever read the john gardner novel

where the alcoholic nihilist philosophy professor who buys a haunted house in Upstate New York has a Mormon assassin come after him. Oh no! I just spoiled the worst aspect of the novel. Otherwise it is a pretty good novel. You'll have to trust me.

I am getting closer and closer to planting those bombs to make the bomb trees.

There is a Hare Krnsa who comes in every week day and paces around. He collects old books and sells them to various bookstores and collectors on our free public phone. He also picks his nose with an unbridled lust that one does not often see in men of his advanced age and spiritual orientation.
