I think, today, they have become synonymous, but I don't think this is correct. I clearly remember hearing multiple times that a labyrinth is essentially a one-path deal, that may twist and turn a lot, but doesn't have intersecting paths.
This is confusing because even that mythological story, Theseus and the Minotaur, features a labyrinth, and Theseus needs a ball of string or yarn or something to find his way back out again. Maybe he doesn't know what a labyrinth is either, or maybe he, in fact, went into a maze.
I need to know the answer before I take mushrooms and watch Labyrinth again this weekend. It will eat me up as the muppets are interlocking with the maze/labyrinth walls.
I'm pretty sure the movie should've been called Maze. Maybe that's not as catchy.
