Is "labyrinth" synonymous with "maze"?

I think, today, they have become synonymous, but I don't think this is correct. I clearly remember hearing multiple times that a labyrinth is essentially a one-path deal, that may twist and turn a lot, but doesn't have intersecting paths.

This is confusing because even that mythological story, Theseus and the Minotaur, features a labyrinth, and Theseus needs a ball of string or yarn or something to find his way back out again. Maybe he doesn't know what a labyrinth is either, or maybe he, in fact, went into a maze.

I need to know the answer before I take mushrooms and watch Labyrinth again this weekend. It will eat me up as the muppets are interlocking with the maze/labyrinth walls.

I'm pretty sure the movie should've been called Maze. Maybe that's not as catchy.

greek root of labyrinth refers specifically to a building, whereas a maze can be outdoors. it's a lot easier to maker them out of hedges i guess.

It was largely outdoors, wasn't it? I think it should have been called 'maze', too.

A modern labyrinth (as a noun) does have intersecting paths.
Maze and labyrinth are now synonymous, but one could argue that labyrinth is a slightly more pleasing word, when spoken, and labyrinthine is more pleasing than mazelike.

The Minotaur's Labyrinth was built by Icarus' father, and appears to have been mazelike, because, of course, it was meant to be confusing. Given this, I couldn't rightly say if an ancient labyrinth was exclusively one-way to the centre, or could also be mazelike.

Labyrinth:

Maze:

While the terms are often used interchangeably, many historians and enthusiasts are passionate about which is which.

I will never feel right using them interchangeably. Never!

Language changes with use.

It's the same reason "benign" is commonly used now in all cases, and "benignant" is seldom heard.

And, unfortunately, "situation" is no longer used to describe employment. I say unfortunately, because I think of work as being very much a situation.

I'm going to lose here, and I'm coming to terms with that.

The thing is, "benign" and "benignant" mean the same thing, and "situation" clearly has another use.

HOWEVER, "LABYRINTH" AND "MAZE" ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE BECAUSE THEY ARE CLEARLY DESCRIBING TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS THAT CANNOT BE DESCRIBED IN OTHER WAYS.

Something like that.

At least my feelings have been expressed on the matter.

If I were inclined to be pernickety, I would point out that benign and benignant do have different uses. Such as: he was a benignant king, who offered benign patronage.

If I were to describe a confusing set of backstreets, I could, in all fairness, call them equally mazelike or labyrinthine.

Therefore, I give you that, although you are correct in saying that they do describe different things, the words have now become interchangeable in every usage.

It's a case of retroactively

It's a case of retroactively redefining two words that originally meant the same thing. Just because there are two variations of the same thing, doesn't mean that the two words used to describe the one thing should be redesignated to describe each subgroup.

I'm glad you brought this up

As far as I can tell, these two words didn't originally mean the same thing and it's the historians who are pushing for the classic usages of the two. And they aren't "subgroups" of some overarching word, because there are actually four or five different distinct types of mazes and labyrinths respectively. I think "maze" and "labyrinth" are then the overarching generalized terms.

I guess none of this can really apply to modern day life because one would probably only use these terms, as Daisy pointed out, in adjectival form. And I'm okay with that, as there aren't mazes and labyrinths just anywhere.

But if someone tries to force me to walk through a labyrinth and it's actually a maze, I'm going to scream "bullshit!" when I exit the fucking thing.

As if this is proving anything.

I can barely see straight. And I fear I've already lost.

On the upside I did download some John Foxx (it's actually newer stuff with some dude named Louis Gordon) and he totally sounds like Bowie in this song and it's awesome. Although, to be fair, some of it is shit. But only like 20 pecent of it.

You're going to lose

You're going to lose interest in Labyrinth a few minutes into your trip. Why don't you take a bath or commune with nature? Or have some sex if that's possible in your life situation.

You are all incorrect!

I've tried watching other movies on mushrooms and they are all impossible to watch. They become either too creepy or too boring or too annoying to pay attention to.

I'm going to argue that there are only about five movies in existence that provide decent tripping material.

I'm also going to argue that there is no set formula for what works, and these five movies are all probably determined on an individual basis anyway.

For example, I've found that The Dark Crystal, another visually interesting Henson flick, is annoying and creepy and boring all at the same time.

Also, anything with much of a plot whatsoever does not work. If it has a fairly complex plot but is visually interesting to the point that it could be watched on mute with musical accompaniment, it may be worthwhile. It should be noted that the concept of "visually interesting" means something else to the hallucinating mind. Textures! It's all about weird textures! Which, I think, is possibly why movies set in totally artificial environments, that have characters that are mostly non-humans, work the best.

The thing is I don't want to sit and waste trips trying out bad movies, as I've spent too much time doing this already.

But, yes, it's all about textures which is why immersing oneself in nature is always great. Sex doesn't seem like a fun idea tripping. It's not as if it's necessarily a bad idea in theory, but thinking about hysterically laughing at my penis for looking like a small, mutated woodland animal and at whomever I'm having sex with for looking like a duck, does nothing to boost my sex drive.

Based on your propounded criteria it seems like Stalker might work well. Also Russians are really into looking for mushrooms. It can't be a coincidence.

No.

But thank Jesus for YouTube, that looks like eye candy!

I will revise my requirements and scrap the hair-brain idea of "artificial environments" working best. Natural or artificial environments are equally intriguing, but environments must take precedence over characters ... unless the characters themselves are visually striking ... and probably not in a CG way. Organic! Textures!

Man.

I saw Stalker the first time in California on three VHS tapes. I saw it again this year at the cinema during a Tarkovsky festival.

It was equally edifying on both occasions.

Malheur?

How was the desert out there?

What I feel this thread boils down to, is that he should forgo both mushrooms and mazes, and just drop DMT instead.

Yeah, I can't even SAVE that in Netflix.

Just an hour ago I watched a real '80s doozy I had never seen before, Mutant a.k.a. Night Shadows.

I think, however, Toxic Zombies would've been more appropriate.

run on gasoline. This may be a novel concept in Chicago, where you have public transportation which you personally are not responsible for refueling, so I accept that the mechanics of the thing might escape you.

There is no gas for sale between Jordan Valley, OR and Winnemucca, NV. There once was a station at Burns Junction, OR, but now it isn't. There still is one at Denio, NV, but it didn't have any gas when I was there. These are the kinds of things you need to anticipate before embarking on an expedition across a region like this. Ever driven the 6 in Nevada? You might as well be on the Moon. Almost 200 miles of nothing from Tonopah to Ely. You don't want to start with half a tank.

Although I will admit I gave an Indian a ride across southern Alberta in the back and thought nothing of it when he asked for a light for his cigarette. I would like to say I live on the edge all the time, to the X-Treme, but really I am just highly absent-minded.

I need to travel before I die. I've only been west of the Mississippi a handful of times, and at least half of those times included trips to Missouri and Iowa respectively.

I have been to New Mexico and Arizona. I don't even count the tackiness of Vegas as being a true trip to the West.

Anyway, the West has seemed pretty surreal every time I've gone. I won't say anything bad about it to you ... you know, with the whole "one-man, body-disposal crew" thing you have going on.
