Lennon v Mothersbaugh

It's almost exactly 30 years since that first Devo album was released. Mothersbaugh has many fond memories from those years, along with a few bitter ones, but one more than any other sticks out.

"We were sleeping in a van," he says. "Six guys, five band members and our sound man, lying on top of the equipment, and we're parked outside (New York rock club) Max's Kansas City. Then John Lennon stuck his head in the window of the passenger seat where I was sitting and he sang Uncontrollable Urge (from Q. Are We Not Men? A. We are Devo) to me, about six inches from my face. It was the perfect song for him to choose and I knew why he did it, too. I'd borrowed the intro from I Want to Hold Your Hand for the intro of Uncontrollable Urge. So he was really saying: 'Those guys stole my intro."'

Lennon 0 Mothersbaugh 1.

No surprizes there.

i have been hating the Beatles more lately than ever before, and I can not put my finger on why. I mean they are less ubiquitous than say, ten years ago, but sweet jah rastafari's cinders!, I can't abide.

Whereas I really do loathe almost every single Beatles song that I have ever had the misfortune of hearing over and over again, I do think that Lennon was the least galling of the lot of them.

I think it is because you can see that he seemed to mean what he said on some level.

McCartney, however, seems like an insincere oaf.

Huh...

I always thought that song was a rip off of "Misty Mountain Hop."

I beg to differ

The Beatles (or rather the combined writing duo of McCartney/Lennon) were pop song geniuses.
And therein lies their problem. They are over-hyped and played to death.
So I understand the critique against the hype and the ubiquity, but I will defend their output on its own merit any day.

perhaps i am missing something

To me this anecdote only conveys that Lennon had a sense of humor, in addition to portraying him as a faintly more sinister figure than the accepted hagiography generally permits.

On its own merit, I find those McCartney/Lennon songs to be mostly average rock songs, and those that I do not find utterly pedestrian, I find downright annoying.

I have, on rare occasions, found Lennon's solo material to be all right, and on even more rare occasions, found Harrison's solo material to be bearable.

McCartney, to me, is most diagreeable, both on a personal, and professional level.

I will agree that the beetles changed the way that popular music was seen by white people. Mainly as a cash cow like gems or other minerals. The beetles made music an industry.

elvis proved that cracker-fied verisons of negro classics could make southern gentlemen some spending money, but the beatles, they had plush dollies and launched AOR as a viable radio option!

After being subjected to Across the Universe last night, I am furthered in my conviction that these songs, while examples of pop brilliance, still remain over-exposed. In short, that movie sucked ass.

see that is where you are wrong. by making this about the beetles, we are saving DEVO from being dragged down by their horribleness.

something you seemed intent upon doing. Devo are awesome and owe nothing to the beetles. At least in my sad, deluded little world.

No that is where YOU are wrong.

You had the perfect opportunity to say "yeah sure the Beatles suck but HEY! what about DEVO?" and then go on about their awesomeness.

But you SPURNED it.

But DEVO are playing in my hometown sometime around now. I wish I was there, to see them, in their funny hats, seated, pressing little buttons on their keyboards.

(Anyway I like the Beatles. If you guys have a problem with their overexposure stop listening to commercial radio.)

ya that's true it's about 30 years since than .. august 24: starwood:by POOCH " What's with all this "devo-manis" all of a sudden, are these guys even liked in cleveland?sure, their music is possibly the best synthesis of progressive and punk styles that I'll ever hear, but are they believable? Their factory worker appearances mixed in with their bizarre lyrics and music, i can"
