McCain was totally checking out her ass during the announcement speech.
VP Palin
If it turns out that down syndrome baby is her daughter's, I'd actually have slightly more respect for her. Or at least I'd be more convinced that she had a sufficiently warped perception of reality to assume the presidency when McCain croaks.
FORNICATOR!
what a transparent ploy to win over the still undecided fornicator demographic.
Good one.
Normally, I'd say the whole daughter issue should be off limits, but it has to be taken into account that here's someone who's been a staunch opponent of sex ed in schools (and also slashed funding to local halfway homes for teenage mothers), yet it's obvious that her own kid could have benefited from some proper sex ed.
I'm less concerned about her than what this says about McCain. Not like I was planning to vote for the guy or anything, but this speaks volumes about his decision-making abilities.
I don't know if it's just AP or what but it seems like every picture they chose to post of him casts him in the worst possible light. That one makes him look like an ancient grandpa frozen with arms outstretched.
I too consider the family thing off limits. They do tend to invite criticism on themselves though when they take those invasive stances on social issues.
And this particular choice for VP candidate just makes McCain look horrible. It comes off as pandering, poorly calculated and makes him look sort of desperate, especially when considered in light of all his rhetoric about experience.
She's got some chops. The RNC's tone isn't exactly diplomatic or non-partisan though. And what the hell makes Republicans so quickly and easily aroused? It seems like anyone could get up on that stage, say something completely senseless and get a thundering wave of applause.
I was impressed with the first half of her speech tonight. It hit all the whacked-out, ultra-christian nails on the, erm, cross.
Mother of a troop! and a Special Needs baby. Relatable, heroic, and properly feminine.
The PTA issue was incredibly well played. Especially seeing as that was aimed at the brownie-baking demographic that fills up those carpeted lunch room meetings. The evangelical den mothers who join PTAs in order to keep the big bang in the bedroom and out of the science books. Plus by denigrating the civic organizing/activism of Obama, she really played up the whole "urban" fear mongering mythology. Brilliant.
But the small town bumpkinism is what really pushed her speech over the top. Playing up the whole salt of the earth, saddle up to the bar with ya feel that still endears George II to the Fox News crowd, really slammed the Democrats and their supposed elitist snobbery.
Where she began to fall apart was when she started talking about John McCain the revolutionary, the maverick, the war hero. The crowd was lost a bit. And by celebrating the whole stick it to the lobbyist, neo-con clan, which was designed to play well with the left over undecided Reagan Democrats, I think the boiling stew of loonies that are robbing and stealing America back into a feudal monarchy endured it with a palpably uncomfortable grimace.
Girlfriend was ON! She came out swinging, which is what she had to do. It is clear that she is going to be the nasty fighter on the ticket, which makes sense because she is a more difficult target to hit back at. It is easier to slam McCain than it is to criticize a PTA, small-town, mother of the people. She is going to be a hard target for the Dems to deal with. Especially since she plays her weaknesses as strengths, which is part of the Karl Rove campaign strategy.
Of course there was nothing of substance in her speech. It is all right-wing pyrotechnics, with nothing there there. Except, of course, more of the same right-wing Republican crap we have been suffering under since Reagan.
My money has always been on McCain winning and that looks more likely than ever.
Her kids names are Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, and Trig. I wonder if Trig is named after Bristol's favorite subject is school. I no longer want to hear white people bitch about black people's names being made up. This shit is ridiculous. I hope Track runs into a land mine. "Tell my mother she killed me!"
This could be your best post ever...
I thought all the angry Vets were part of the Repubilican party! But Stoopid Johnny really outshines himself when he lets loose.
Secondly, I agree with Kevin, unfortunately, this country is not yet ready to accept a black as supreme ruler. In part because ROOTS is laughable now, which is shame because it makes it easier for whites to claim slavery was campy.
Secondly Secondarily, the democrats are making another huge tactical error by playing the Palin's Family is Off Limits card. Stoopid J has the right idea, since the GOP's culture war is so successful because of its focus on YOUR family, the Democrats need to steal that shit away. And now is the time. Obama would not send Track to war with no equipment or under false pretense or without a clear objective. Obama does not want Sarah Palin to worry about her son stepping on a land mine, nor does he want YOU to WORRY about YOUR child either. On and On.
Fuck it. The GOP has got this shit wrapped up in a body bag already.

There's still plenty of time for McCain to remind the public how unlikeable and evil he is. Do you vote R.John? I'd hate to be in Ohio where my vote actually meant something. Too much pressure.
I vote. In the last two elections I voted against both parties.
This election I am having troubles. I really think that electing Obama is just asking for trouble down the road - meaning he is inheriting a HUGE clusterfuck of problems that are only going to get much much worse. The scenerio is ripe for another Carter-like paralysis. And I would hate to have our first black president take on these insurmountable problems and then become saddled with their failures by the pundits of history.
So I am leaning toward McCain just to punish the Republicans. They deserve to keep watch as america gets stuck in the plumbing of the world's toilet. While I understand that the arguement will be made that such a tactic is short-sighted as far as the supreme court nominations and other social cultural issues are concerned, I sincerely doubt much will change either way.
An Obama presidency will not reverse most of the executive power that was grabbed by Bush, nor will GitMo be closed. The security measures and the expansions represented by Homeland Security will not be dismanteled. The war will continue and possibly expand, energy will get worse, homes will be lost, bailouts and deregualtion will continue. Abortion will be legal and queers will not be allowed to get married.
So why not fuck the GOP and make them keep McCain alive for four more years.
There will never be a scenario in which the first black president will not have difficulties. Personally, I predict that Obama will inherit a dying country much like the first black mayors of big cities inherited collapsing infrastructures. If he is elected be prepared for smears and a lot of dirt digging. He'll have to be angel in order to avoid impeachment proceedings late in his term. If he seeks criminal charges against the Bush administration, he can expect a bullet. If all fairs well he may only be blamed for plummeting the country into a depression and losing a war.
I am tempted to say that there is no way McCain will win only because I can't picture how his term will play out. I just can't see it. The crystal ball is fuzzy. I feel like it's a repeat of the 1960 election: two term Republican exiting, anti-commie fatigue, Korean war blah blah. Not a perfect parallel but close enough. However I have no faith in the election process or the American people. I can only expect the worst.
So we are agreed: we're fucked coming or going.
I think Johnny's analogy of black mayors of dying big cities is right on the money.
I actually espouse much of the same argument RJohn is making except for one big exception. If McCain wins, the country will suffer in both the short and long term, hopefully speeding up the demise of the American Empire. But it will also strengthen the Republican party, breathing new life into a failing corpse. If McCain loses, then the Republican party is in serious trouble. The most likely scenario is that the far right will attack the 'moderates' of the party and claim that they cost them the election, with McCain and the 'moderates' blaming the far right wing. The divisions between the economic conservatives and social conservatives will likely get stronger and further pull the party apart. If they win, the will continue to function together under Grover Norquist's big tent. If they lose, the tent is likely to collapse. Even Norquist sees that.
But either way, we're fucked.
As usual, the best commentary comes from Jon Stewart on the Daily Show. The fact that he says what the wishy-washy liberals are too scared to say is a depressing reflection of the state of affairs in this country.
