Getting home on time

by Nora Rocket | 06/09/2008 | in Boston | DIY | home life | jackassery | public transportation

When faced with your transit line being on fire, proceed directly to your second-best option. Do not think, "oh, I'll try something new this time" or "maybe they'll get the shuttle buses sorted out real soonish-like." You shouldn't, and they won't, and you will be either 2 1/2 hours late getting home or an hour late getting to work, rushing to someplace you don't even want to be anyway.

In other, not unrelated news, our Boston exit strategy is shaping up more quickly, which pleases me.

This summer I am getting back on the blog wagon. I hope it's drawn by a team of clydesdales.

I'm also making stuff around the house. I just topped an old desk with a layer of cork and hung 9 small line drawings of the wildflowers of North America.

My birthday is Saturday and I'm throwing myself a brunch, with pancakes. You only WISH you could be here while I elevate the temperature of my already ass-meltingly hot kitchen with my Big Ugly Cast Iron Two Burner Griddle.

What are your summer plans? Anyone going to camp, or are fuel prices keeping us all home with our video games?

hey, I've been reading some stuff on the Boston R&R section of CL about some people getting upset about Legal Sea Foods ads on green line trolleys? What's the scoop? Any input?

*looking for a job
*playing lots of scrabulous (scrabble) on facebook
*(avoiding) writing poetry
*reading lots of books
*obsessively creating playlists at playlist.com (my newest one is found here)

and yes, I wish I was there, cos I'm absolutely nuts about pancakes.

Okay, it's really, really stupid.

The ads are not funny, but it's basically a fish face saying something rather cheeky, and then the tagline 'Fresh Fish.' RDRR, right? Anyway, the big problem is that one of the fish says the train conductor has a face like a haddock or something, and the conductors, foxy bunch that they apparently are, are not cool with that.

Slow news day.

You're a better biker than me. I'm still a little too timid to face Boston traffic, Boston roads, and hills to ride to work.

I did ride to the park this weekend and it was rewarding. Fucking gorgeous Saturday we had.

The dumbination continues. The objectionable speech bubble has been pasted over with a red box that reads "CENSORED." Like the Man is keeping Legal down. Again with the slow news day. In the meantime, the Longfellow bridge will be closed to pedestrian spectators for the Fourth, they've closed one side to pedestrian traffic altogether, and both interior lanes are closed to all traffic (so it's two lanes of traffic rather than four)--all the while my red line train trundles through a slow zone every morning and evening.

I don't know about anybody else, but if they have to cut pedestrian AND auto traffic in half, how in blazes is it okay to run the train? I'm feeling unsafe. Honestly, shouldn't we be going *faster* rather than slower if the bridge is structurally unsound? So we get a huge head of steam in case the bridge crumbles, so we can jump the gap and dramatically pull into the MGH station?

For real. I saw it in "Wanted."
