From as far back as I can remember up until I was about 18, my dreams were dominated by one enduring image or occurrence: in almost every dream, no matter what the situation was, my eyes would get stuck shut. I'd blink, in the dream, and just wouldn't be able to open them. I could pry them open with my fingers, in the dream, but with the next blink they'd stick again. It's the kind of imagery that *must mean something* but I don't know what it means. The kind of thing that maybe I'd look up in a big ol' dream dictionary if I was in a chain bookstore and had some time to kill.

But at about 18 or 19, this imagery stopped appearing and I haven't had recurring dream imagery up until the past two weeks. Lately, I've had several dreams in which I lose all or most of my teeth. In some, I try to return the teeth or tooth to my mouth, but it's always too large for the empty socket. The most recent was the most troubling: my teeth started chipping, cracking, crumbling, and peeling out for no reason, along with strips of my gums. In the dream I cried, screamed, felt around my mouth with my tongue afraid that I'd feel another broken tooth falling away from the socket. It was the only dream in which I knew what was happening was irreversible, that my teeth were gone for good. It's been the only dream in which I've lost more than one or two teeth total. And it's the only dream in which I've piled the tissue and teeth from my mouth together outside my mouth, on a plate for safekeeping, crying and hoping a doctor can help me. Up until the last month I'd only had a couple of tooth dreams a year, but the frequency's certainly up now.

In the last four nights, I've had two dreams with very vivid spider imagery. I haven't run into a lot of spiders since we relocated to the east coast--haven't had a lot of spider exposure since I left my folks' house for the dorms and then the city, in fact. So I'm not entirely sure where this is coming from now. Last night, the spiders were large, colourful, like the garden spiders I remember from my family's first house in the relatively less arid southeastern corner of my home state. One stretched towards me on its web as I pulled one strand of the web, trying to free my hand from the sticky. The other dream featured more, smaller spiders, teeming I don't remember where, but teeming.

My teeth are fine, great even, and I haven't seen but a few spiders in the last year. This must mean something.

Anna Karenina is one of my favorite books that I would never want to read again.

p.s. when I was a kid, I had some sort of weird thing (I think as a result of the two eye surgeries that I had) where every single morning my eyes were crusted shut. Sometimes I could open them with a little force, but usually I'd have to yell for my parent or wander blindly to his or her room so that they could put a wet washcloth over them so that I could open my eyes. It was pretty scary. I'm glad that's stopped.

Equipped with the knowledge I quickly got from some bootleg dream Web site (thanks insomnia!) I now know what ails you based on your dream imagery.

Teeth: teeth falling out can mean job troubles, but can also mean that you have "uttered some false or foul words and those words are coming back to haunt you." Based on your other dreams, I'm going with the latter.

Spiders: Since you didn't mention your spiders were spinning webs, and because that would indicate that you are in fact happy with your job and creative endeavors, and because that may conflict with your teeth dreams, I'm telling you that you didn't see any spiders spinning webs.

Instead, the presence of a spider means that you feel like an outsider in some situation, or you desire to keep your distance from it. It also signifies relationship troubles. Specifically, you are in a clingy and over-controlled relationship. You may realize that this clinger is a good force in your life, protecting you from some self-destructive behavior, but they are sucking the life out of you.

Eyes: To dream that you cannot open your eyes, indicates that there is a situation that you are just plain refusing to see or acknowledge. This is obviously related to your clingy relationship. It can also mean the avoidance of intimacy.

In conclusion, you are suffering from a relationship problem. You may not want out of this relationship but you need your personal space. You have a lot of internal guilt right now though, relating to something you either have already said to them that may have nearly jeopardized this relationship or something you said about them to someone that you are worried will get back to them and jeopardize the relationship.

That'll be $500.

Up to the age of 18 or 19 you were selective in what you deemed to be your personal reality, turning a "blind eye" to things in your environment that did not jive with your personal sense of "self." Only your subconscious realized that you were doing this of course. Once you grew up, you took the blinders off and it was a real psychological "kick in the teeth."

From my extensive research of dream interpretation, I would say the spider imagery is an indication that you are experiencing some vague universally applicable emotion about some vague universally experienced event... or perhaps you may experience something like this in the future--or possibly you have experienced it in the past. Always be sure to align your chakras every 5000 miles.

Speaking of gamelan, have you discovered the joy of the musical device located within the MIT red line station?

I just found out that existed, and that it might be in a little danger. Seems they need someone or some group to take over the care and feeding...

Maybe I'll allow a little extra time in my commute some morning and make beeyouteeful music for the squares of Boston.

I'll just make that a part of my regular maintenance plan, with air pressure checks, fluids, oil lube & filter.

Actually, I think you've hit it with the former. Job troubles. I'm as honest as the day is long. *flutters lashes*

You know, I didn't. No webbys.

Ding ding ding. Outsider in Boston, outsider at work, holding myself away from involvement because I am stubborn and I resist engaging with my current home city.

She's been gone for almost three months. I be doing all my own clinging at the moment.

The eye thing was from before, but you're on to something about refusing to see, I think. A lot changed for me from 17 to 18 to 19, not the least of which was my name. Also with the acknowledgement of the queerness, and really coming into my adult personality. Maybe that's it.

Funny enough, this pretty much already happened and is over now. Which leads me to another recurring dream you can interpret: in it, I'm fucking a former coworker with whom I had a tryst, and it's totally awesome. Pretty sure that means something.

Okay, the eye thing's totally freaky. I have an eye thing anyway--it's why I never learned to swim.

On the subject of A.K., I understand why one would not want to read it again, but what did you like so very much about it? I'm not being coy, I liked it alright but didn't lurve it and certainly wouldn't reread. What's your reader's report for ol' Leo's big book?
