Week three

by Nora Rocket | 09/19/2006 | in Chicago | work

Now we are solidly into week three of my unemployment, and it's neither relaxing nor productive. It's not like a pleasant break from the norm in which I can enjoy the late summer weather, stay up late, drink in the afternoon, bike around town, and generally contribute nothing to the GDP. If I had an end point, maybe I'd feel a little more secure. If I wasn't new and pretty much alone in a new city in a new time zone, maybe I'd be feeling a little more confident.

The high from last week's rock-ass interviews has passed; now I'm looking forward to this Thursday's interview and the possibility that I'll hear back from the two contacts who are lagging behind in their response time.

Oh PP blog and forums, thank goodness for you. Thank goodness for the great NPR and PBS in Boston. Thank goodness for my 8-bit Nintendo. Thank goodness for the couple of good farmers' markets in the city.

Gawd I miss Chicago.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy occasional aimlessness, but I prefer knowing that it will end and that paychecks will resume. Also, hello, new in a city = less fun than surrounded by love and friends.

About three and a half years ago, I went through an extended period of joblessness that did not suit me well at all. Though it was in those days that I rocked over to the PP office, handed Sinker the issue of his magazine covered in my red pen corrections, and offered to proofread his pages for free. Good times.

This is only week three; I'm very nearly upbeat. If I hit week 10, then you'll see some serious angst, so ease off.

I'm not being pushy about it, i'm just saying take the ime and relax. explore the inner creavaces of the new city. Let it introduce itself and then things should go easy
