So after months and months without internet my dad was finally able to afford it again. The first thing I do was sign up for the SAT's, how very studious of me. Senior year is going alright so far, I'm just glad I'm on track to graduate, not like some of my friends that have to go to night school and get a 0 and 7th period, that's shitty. It's exciting to get brochures and all that stuff from NYU, and then to have gone and visit the Berkeley campus this summer and have met all the head honchos and all that crap, it feels like I'm ready to leave. But my family is discouraging me to go any of these schools. My dad isn't in my face about it, he's more like, "can't you study this at (insert local school here)". But everyone else it's just "why do you want to go so far away?" "You can get the same education here for cheaper." And I do let this get to me, as much as I wish I wouldn't. Whenever I tell anyone what I really want to do is go to Oxford, they look at me like I'm joking, and once they figure out I'm not, they just kind of smile and look at me in a pitiful way. I guess it is pretty far-fetched, my GPA is a 3.2, which is nothing compared to half of the people at that school, but it doesn't hurt to dream now does it?

Freedom of Speech
An AP English Languange and Comp. teacher at my school recently accepted a student's idea to create the classes own "post secret" type book. Since the postsecret. com website has been known to cause controversy within school administration, the teacher felt it best to make sure that she followed school guidelines and asked for permission from the school district. Once all students turned in their anonymous secrets and the book was published for the students, by the students, the book had to be read by the school principal for complete authorization. The book sat on his desk for no less than a week and he granted permission TWICE (Once for the book to be available in the classroom, and twice for it to be sold to the students). Everything went as planned but then a wave of controversy began once the books were actually distributed. Two other teachers reported to the principal that they were offended by some of the secrets in the book. Mainly, a racial rant about black students BY a black student. The books were confiscated, mainly snatched away from students' hands. The teacher was given an ultimatum of either all the books in the principal's by the end of the week or she was to be fired. Other controversial topics in the book were mainly people writing about how they had been molested as youngsters, or dealing with drugs and alcohol, abusive relationships, and deaths. Those topics are another reason why those books were confiscated. All 150 + books were turned into the office for "censoring" but no student has received their copy back.
$40,000 Bonus
I've had my first experience with an army recruiter. I'm on my high school's LA marathon team, so I'm walking to the track after school and an army recruiter spots my friend and I. Right away he starts asking us how many miles we're running today. I tell him seven. He says if we can run seven miles, we can join the army. I tell him no thanks and keep walking. The creep follows us and tells us, " I see by your ID's that you're juniors...you can get a $40,000 bonus if you sign up now." I had started to get annoyed by then so I just tell him that four years of murdering isn't worth the money. He looks surprised, finally gives up and walks away.
Today, as I Walked Home.
Today, as I walked home.
I realized lots of things. And saw lots of things. Like the two middle school kids huddling on the corner. The guy holding the girl's hand and whispering sweet nothings in her ear.I realized they really were sweet nothing's because in a few weeks or months they will mean nothing to either of them at all. That's mean. I shouldn't say that. Then as I crossed the street, the four guys that passed me in their beat up Honda and slowed down and stared, as if they'd never seen a girl before. I wanted to laugh at them. The sand piling up in one corner of the tagged up wall because of the wind.
I'm Back.
Yep, I'm back a week later than scheduled because my uncle passed away 3 days before I was supposed to leave. Let's just say it was the best and the worst summer. I wish I could have stayed longer in Mexico because my uncle's 5 year old started having nightmares after the funeral where he woke up screaming for his daddy. Well, here's a melancholy hello, punk planet.
The Amazing Asian Asparagus Recipe
Ingredients:
Asparagus (Personally, I prefer the Peruvian kind, but whatever floats your boat will do as well and you should be able to figure out how much you need, depending on how many people you need to cook for)
1/2 Cup Sesame Seed Oil
3/4 Cup Crushed Red Pepper
1/2 Cup Soy Sauce
There's one thing I've learned though, if you're going to steam the asparagus, it's best to cover the tips with a li'l tent of foil (that way, the tip doesn't over cook).
First, fill a pot with water and a little bit of salt and boil till the asparagus gets to your desired tenderness. (Steve's tip of covering the asparagus tips in foil so the tips don't overcook is very useful)
A Conversation Between My Dad and I
Dad: What are you doing?
Me: Reading.
Dad: Why don't you go and do something productive?
---ten minutes later---
Dad: Do you still want to do that journalist crap?
Me: Yes.
Dad: I know you don't care about money, but I think you would be better off finding something where you can actually make money, I mean you don't want to live in some apartment for the rest of your life do you?
Me: So you want me to be a doctor or lawyer or something?
Dad: That's not what I'm saying...but I'd be happy if you did that instead.
Live Earth
Is it just me or is it hard to believe that Snoop Dogg uses biodegradable plates? Or anything for that matter.
I'm going to Mexico for the weekend
So adios Punk Planet!
The body of your blog entry is too short. You need at least 10 words.
What Punk Planet Meant to Me
Punk Planet was to me, a sort of revelation, through this magazine I found that there were other people out there who thought like me, and that wanted to change things in this world like I did. The magazine reinforced all the things I believed in and inspired me to stick to them, even though many people I know believe they are too "radical" or "outrageous". Punk Planet also gave me the chance to let my voice be heard when in PP79, Anne gave me the chance to write an article on my high school. When the issue came out, I was ecstatic to be there in pages alongside people which I really respect.
