Corporate Sponsored Touring Comes to the Micro Indie Level

by PAUL M DAVIS | 08/30/2007 | in independent culture | marketing | not battlestar galactica

The altruistic folks at Taco Bell just want all "local" bands (meaning what precisely?) to know that they're totally down for the scene with their "Feed The Beat" promotion, offering free food to select touring bands.

Quote:
"Last year's Feed the Beat was a runaway success in getting Taco Bell connected with some amazing bands," said Bob Fulmer, interim chief marketing officer, Taco Bell Corp. "What's great about Feed the Beat is there is no catch. No stickers on guitars, no need to become a Taco Bell talking head, we are simply feeding bands free Fourthmeal and supporting indie music."

at connecting taco bell with local bands? that's their big pitch?

is the presence of a global brand now just maybe enough to ensure success?

1:1 odds that none of TB's PR staff has ever toured the country (even short hops) by van.

When I lived in ABQ, I used to book all-ages shows at a bakery/bagel/sandwich shop called Fred's Breads. The owner (whose name wasn't Fred) used to give any touring band that stopped in and identified themselves free food. I always thought that was great.

So why do I feel all weird and icky now that Taco Bell is doing it?

When my old band was on the road, we outlawed eating at Taco Bell. What it did to the bass player's already potent flatulence was simply ungodly. So I suspect this is actually some nefarious corporate plan to break up fledgling indie bands.

Fuck, I missed the deadline. I totally woulda sold my soul for $500 worth of cinnamon twists!

I once heard that Col. Sanders put a clause in his will that all KFC employees needed to take a secret oath to feed people if they had no money. I actually tried to get some biscuits and gravy when I was totally broke and out of my mind at some KFC in Paris. "pas d'argent! J'ai besoin des biscuits et gravy s'il vous plait! Colonel Sanders dit que c'est 'okay,' n'est-ce pas?" I think it's pretty much an urban legend.
