My Kool-Aid Blog...The Launch

by Seitan | 11/04/2007 | in cold | drink mix | Funny Face | Kool-Aid | Pantry Pride | pitcher | Punchy | refreshing | soft drinks

Hi everyone! And welcome to my Kool-Aid® Blog.

Well, it's probably best to begin at the beginning. Now, you might think your old buddy grew up in a house just burstin' with those tantalizin' packets of powdered gold, but you'd be wrong.

As a child, I was always aware of Kool-Aid®, but seldom got to drink Kool-Aid® proper. I don't know whether it was because it was overpriced or you had to add sugar or what. You know how it is when you're a kid...for the most part, your parents pick what you get to eat and drink, and you more or less go along with it.

We did get other drink mixes, however...Funny Face was a big favorite. Maybe it was because it was pre-sweetened and available on the cheap. My brother and I even sent away for a couple of the mugs...I got Goofy Grape and my brother got "With It" Watermelon.

And there was always the generic Pantry Pride drink mix. Ah, Pantry Pride...a long-defunct East Coast supermarket chain that I could start a whole other blog on...

And Hawaiian Punch®...boy, we drank our share of that, too. It's been ages since Punchy has pummeled me with his fruit-juicy fist.

So, yeah, I drank a lot of soft-drinkity drinks in my day, but they were mostly non-Kool-Aid®. I'm sure I had it at birthday parties and such, but it was never a staple in my house. No, sir, I didn't really get in on the Kool-Aid® boom 'til '93 or '94...but that's a blog entry for another day.

What about Juicy Juice? I think kids today need to appreciate that we drank sugared "juices" out of giant CANS without that cute pansy convienence of juiceBOXES.

I remember back when Capri Sun was "new" and "hip." And that's juice in a godforsaken foil bag for chrissakes. That you could never get the fuckin' straw to pierce on the first try.

It's still around, but that shit was once state-of-the-art.

Hi-C was pretty awesome too as far as sugar-as-juice drinks go.

And, while this blog is shaping up to be pretty decent, dude, you cannot argue that cost was a deterrent for your parents buying Kool-aid. Seriously, weak argument.

Kool-aid packets are STILL like a quarter.

Maybe they just liked feeding your racist tendencies by buying this:

...which is from '64-'65 apparently...which would be about right...you were, what, 10 or 12 back then?

I sincerely hope I never did drink Chinese Cherry. That shit was probably just powdered lead!

Or should I say...for Greg's sake...was probabry just powdered read.

And now...the ironic politically incorrect coda in light of all this...

I used to play the Hawaiian Punch board game in kindergarten. You molded your game piece out of play-do and when somebody landed on the same spot as you they got to smash your piece flat, which I suppose was what put the PUNCH in the game.

I think Todd and 1979 were made for each other.

Buck Rogers was on the tube, Disco Duck was on the transistor radio, and punk rock wasn't even cold on the slab yet. That was also the year of my great Charlie Brown Dictionary heist, as I recall. Yeah, you can bet I knocked back a couple of frosty Hawaiian Punches after that one, yessir.
