help a kid today

by Sinker | 12/11/2006 | in children | disease

I just received an e-mail from my friend Kim Coletta, who many of you know as the bassist of Jawbox, others know as the owner of DeSoto records, and still others may know as just being an amazing, inspiring woman. She is all three, and much more.

She is also a good friend to her one-time bandmate J Robbins, who's young son Callum was born with a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. There is no cure for the disease, and treatments for it, both conventional and alternative are incredibly expensive. Since J is a indie recording engineer, you can imagine that they don't have the best health insurance and the bills are stacking up.

Kim, being a good friend, has set up a donation page on the DeSoto website to help J, Janet and Callum pay for what they need to make their son's life the best it can be given the circumstances.

If J's music--through his bands Jawbox, Burning Airlines, the Channels and more; or the stuff he's recorded over the years like the Promise Ring, Jets to Brazil, Jawbreaker, Against Me, and many many others--has ever touched you, give a little money. Every little bit helps a very brave family get through a very hard time.

This is heartbreaking. I was just recovering from the James Kim saga, and now this.

I guess I should have said "done," as well, just so people don't think all I did was leave a stupid comment.

This also made it fairly high up on Digg yesterday/today. Although I'm sure it helped get the message out, be forewarned that in that post there's a fair amount of major assholes airing their pea brained opinions on the subject, as the internet is wont to do.

Digg is what happens when neo-libertarian Best Buy employees get their own public forum.

But I don't want to sidetrack this any further...this is horrible. I'll be giving what I can as soon as payday comes.
