Is this the beginning of the start of the end of MySpace?

by Sinker | 10/30/2006 | in copyright | technology

So NewsCorp (that's the Rupert Murdoch-controlled owner of massive numbers of media companies including Fox News and now MySpace) announced today that they were going to begin cracking down on copyright violations of music on MySpace--files found to be in violation would be deleted and the users threatened with banning.

"MySpace is staunchly committed to protecting artists' rights, whether those artists are on major labels or are independent acts," said Chris DeWolfe, MySpace chief executive and co-founder.

The company said users who repeatedly attempt to upload copyright music files will be permanently barred from the site.

This HAS to signify a much larger move by NewsCorp MySpace to clean up copyrighted material of all media. And that's GOT to take a chunk of of the appeal, right?

It'll be interesting to watch this play out.

If Murdoch would just crack down on goddamn HTML-overloading backgrounds, he and I would see eye-to-eye!

...People love to embed three concurrently running Hawthorne Heights videos on their page. My question is, how many of the major copyright owners who are complaining about their content being uploaded to the site have uploaded it themselves as viral PR? I mean, doesn't every major-label band out there have a sanctioned Myspace page already?

I'm very curious about this "audio watermarking" software that YouTube claims they are developing to find copywritten content. How exactly does that work, is Myspace going to use something similar, and considering that neither site can keep the backend functioning on a regular basis, will it work?

In other news, this is my new favorite page on Myspace:
Myspace Error Alerts

I think the main problem

Is that they're signaling a mindset shift from users as customers to users as criminals. That hasn't worked out for anyone in the past. Sure, MySpace is ubiquitous right now, but may take less than most think to tip the scales.

Given the flash-in-the-pan history of Friendster, I don't know how anyone at the controls can imagine MySpace will survive without a serious retooling of the joint (all copyrighted materials issues aside).

How long have people - even avid users - been bitching about the "user experience" of MySpace? All it would take would be another, more "feature rich" (for lack of a better phrase) site to come along and supplant MySpace within the ranks of even their most devoted. Given the recent opening up of Facebook (no pun intended) and the launch of Vox this week, that site may already be here.

Another sign of impending doom — look at how many YOUNG kids are getting on MySpace (despite their "no one under 14" rule). Nothing spells uncool any hangout spot, virtual or otherwise, than a bunch of tweeners hanging out there.

Anyway, decent article in the Washington Post this week concerning the drop-off in popularity.

is Six Apart's answer to MySpace. (Not as stodgy as Typepad or Movable Type, I suppose.) From what I've seem already, it's bested MySpace in the design department. (A little cartoon-y, but not ugly.)

Not that hard to do! I agree with the "cartoony-ness," but I guess that's the "Web 2.0," er, FLAVAH.

The site doesn't show you too much other than a screen shot — I think I'm going to open an account just to noodle around with it and see what you can do with it.

Man oh man, has anyone taken a look at yOUTUBE? Helllooooo? What kind of freaky loophole keeps this site from getting shut down daily?

Personally I think it does make a huge difference when you are just listening to shared files and not actually exchanging them. Bands pay tons of money to try and get people to see their videos, why get mad when someone gives them more exposure? I could see the argument that p2p sharing kills sales, but watching a video on someone's myspace page?
