hell

by steve | 08/15/2007

Man, I'm really hating life.

Turns out, the place I've been renting has been in foreclosure since last Feb. (I started renting in March) apparently, the bank attempted to auction the house and it went unsold. (backstory- I came home late one sat evening, and there was a note taped to the back door which essentially read: "is anyone living here? call this number: {completely different phone number from my landlord's} so I did, and well, found out that the guy I'd been dealing with is now my former landlord.) So, I'm basically living in a place w/out paying rent, trying to find a roommate (Providence rent is insane as are the utility rates) and have received very few responses to my queries to posted "roommate wanted" ads. I really don't see why its so hard for people to create an eamil that says "thanks for your interest, the spot has been filled" or whatever. Jesus.

The moral of the story is:
Before renting a place, look it up under foreclosures. FWIW, there's no way in hell I could afford to buy it make the payments.

So your "landlord" has been collecting rent from you for a property he doesn't own? Sounds like you may have a pretty good case for getting back a bunch of rent $$$$.

Are you in a collegey neighborhood? I ask because when I was in Boston living in Mission Hill (which is populated with lots of kids from Emerson and Mass Art) I went through a somewhat similar thing. Real Estate companies like to kick renters out in September so they can get new students in and collect the fees which are usually one month's rent. We had a year long lease starting in September and were paying like 2 G's a month for rent. in August we got a letter full of legalese saying that the property management company where we had been sending our rent to was no longer the management company and that the rent would increase some ridiculous amount. We decided to move and a couple weeks after we received the first letter we got a phone call from yet another company informing us that our rent would increase a different ridiculous amount. Turns out this is one of the many illegal ways real estate companies insure a steady stream of new leases and new fees. Had we had our wits about us more than we did we totally should've sued someone instead just putting a brick through their window (although, if you find out that you are being fucked over like this, I recommend maybe doing both.)
