Andy and Mike from Outside the Loop Radio interviewed me the other night about the US Postal Service's new rate hikes and the future of independent publishing. Which I believe I present as rather bleak. Democracy gets a similarly murky outlook. But you know what? I never promised you a rose garden. Just the truth as I come across it.

Dear Colleagues -

The moment of truth is at hand for the community radio movement that has been building over the past year. The FCC is going to open a five-day window this October for full power FM public education radio license applications. This is an historic moment - the completion of the community radio map.

For Chicagoans, there is no direct impact in this announcement - despite our achingly arid airwaves, we do not have any available bandwidth. But for independent media producers and other active citizens, there is a critical networking opportunity - literally - in this window. The so-called collar counties of Chicago - including Dekalb, Will, Kendall - all have available bandwidth. A network of community radio stations could be developed and linked together - a Chicagoland Independent Radio Network.

System You Radio #9 is online now. I also have 8 other shows archived, plus, a Joe Strummer tribute show. On top of all that, I show a visual artist on the site for two months at a time. It's all free and worth a look and a listen! I'll post the set list for #9. I play a lot of old stuff, but some new every now and then. Again, it's free...the way it should be!
