The release reading for RAGAD # 3 is upon us. This Saturday join a whole host of fine readers for performances in celebration of our third installment. Readers include SPENCER DEW, BEN TANZER (author of the new novel Lucky Man), PETER ANDERSON, AND JOSH STEVENS. Editor NICK OSTDICK will read and host. Much fun, to be sure.

Q: So, Nora, what have you been up to?
A: Oh, not much. Working and not working, sleeping and not sleeping, reading, sweating, not cooking, and taking cold showers.

Q: Whatcha reading?
A: Well, I just finished re-reading Tipping the Velvet and last weekend I ripped through All the Pretty Horses, the writing style of which reminded me of Faulkner, but somehow I was able to stand it--can't say the same for Faulkner. I'm late to the party on Cormac McCarthy, and I've wanted to read The Road ever since that guy I interviewed with at The Retail Bookstore back in September mentioned that he was loving it (you can always trust employee recommendations of that sort) but I am concerned I will lose some cred reading an Oprah book. She ruins everything. But still...the book existed before she picked it, and there's some comfort in the fact that a post-apocalyptic novel of ruination and devastation will be in the hands of many people more used to things like guest appearances by Dr. Phil or Best Friend Gail. Right now I'm tackling Anna Karenina. Little light beach reading, you know...

Orphan Works Series Kickoff -- Friday, May 25th --

The Chicago Underground Library is pleased to announce Orphan Works, a new reinterpretation series. Unlike traditional reading series, our performers are not reading from their own work. Some of them won’t even be reading. We’re calling upon a variety of the most creative minds in Chicago to burrow deep into our collection of anonymous works or ones for which no further information on the author can be found. Commonly referred to as “Orphan Works,” these lost publications will be brought back to life: read, reinterpreted, and reunited with the audience they’ve been missing. There is an ongoing debate on the status of works like these, and a number of groups and individuals are fighting to keep them free for creative reuse and artistic exploration.

There will be juggling, RSS feeds, pinwheels, sitars, thinking outside the box, clowns, a live performance by Foreigner, visioning and futuring, and readings by Ben Tanzer and Steve Lafler from the novel Lucky Man and graphic novel 40 Hour Man respectively.

Catalog your books online.

If you are a reader like I am, you probably also own an abundance of books. Keeping track of those books can sometimes be a bit of a hassle. After trying numerous, often strenous different methods to catalog my nearly 200 books using tangible means, I finally gave up.

Before long the desire to catalog my books came back and I figured I'd try a different method: electronic. After a quick search online I narrowed my options down to two sites, "Collectorz*" and "LibraryThing" and looked over each site debating which one suited me the best.

Collectorz requires that you download a program and only allows you to catalog 100 books before you must begin paying for their services. LibraryThing on the other hand is all done online. Setting up an account is very easy and it allows you to input up to 200 books for free before it will charge you to start using its services.
